Thamilchelvan killing, a barbaric act- Australian Tamils

Australian Federation of Tamil Associations (AFTA), in a media release issued Monday, condemned in the "strongest possible terms, the brutal assassination of the Political Wing leader and the Chief Negotiator of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam by the Sri Lankan airforce," and said AFTA "salutes the Tamil political leader who had won the hearts and minds of all the Tamil people, diplomats in Colombo and many other international dignitaries." AFTA appealed to the "peace loving people of the international community" to "use their influence to persuade the Sri Lankan government to stop all its indiscriminate aerial bombing of civilian targets."

Vaiko condemns India for providing military assistance to Sri Lanka

Vaiko, the leader of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) in a communique issued Saturday, called upon the international community to strongly condemn the killing of Liberation Tigers Political Head S.P.Thamilchelvan who was slain in a targeted air attack in Ki'linochchi and condemned the Government of India for providing military assistance to Sri Lanka. An array of political leaders from Tamil Nadu, including K. Veeramani, Pandiyan, Ramdoss and Nedumaran have condemned the killing while Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Kalaignar Karunanidhi condoled the demise of Thamilchelvan, passing a subtle message that the Tamils of Sri Lanka haven't gone brotherless.

US Senator expresses concern of Sri Lanka's rights violations

Advocating for "international human rights field presence" in Sri Lanka, and asserting "there is no military solution to Sri Lankan conflict," the Democratic Senator from Vermont and Chairman of Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy, in a statement issued at the Senate sessions on 2nd November said: " We have been increasingly concerned with reports of abuses by Sri Lankan government forces - not from the LTTE or their supporters as some have inaccurately claimed, but from the United Nations, the Department of State, and international human rights organizations."

27 civilians arrested in Pussellawa

Anuradhapura Magistrate orders remand for 11 Tamil civilians

Civilian, 6 combatants killed in Mannaar clashes

A young mother was killed when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers and Special Task Force (STF) commandos in Murungkan, opened fire from their positions around 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The SLA and the LTTE engaged in offensive operations at two different positions. At least three FDL positions of the Sri Lankan forces were destroyed. The SLA has suffered heavy casualties. Military sources put their casualty figures at 3 killed and 32 wounded. Meanwhile, Murungkan Police has handed over 3 dead bodies of LTTE female cadres to Mannaar hospital.

Tigers gun down 2 DPU intruders in Mannaar

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Tuesday said a roaming patrol of their border security combatants on Monday evening gunned down two Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) intruders inside LTTE controlled Valaignan Kaddu area in Mannaar district. Arrangements were underway to hand over the dead bodies of the SLA soldiers through the ICRC, informed sources in Vanni said. The Tigers have lost a combatant in the counter-ambush.

Rights group launches campaign against attacks on Journalists in Sri Lanka

Expressing concern on the level of prevailing impunity of the killings of media personnel in Sri Lanka, the Asian Human Rights Commission, citing 11 cases where 12 Tamil media personnel were killed since 31 May 2004 till 29 April 2007, on Tuesday urged the public to write letters to the concerned Sri Lankan authorities demanding impartial investigation in order to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. "Not a single person has been brought before the court," in the 11 cases, the AHRC noted and urged the public to forward a copy of their appeal to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions.

Four Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Kfir fighter bombers have attacked Koampaavil, a densely populated residential area in Puthukkudiyiruppu in Mullaiththeevu district, Monday between 10 and 10:40 a.m., destroying two houses and wounding the owners of the houses, a 43-year-old mother and a 46-year-old man. More than 3800 students, attending the schools in the area, were forced to seek bunkers for safety.

3 civilians killed, 9 wounded in SLA shelling on IDP settlement

Three civilians, two of them belonging to a single family and an 8-months pregnant mother, were killed and nine wounded when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) fired artillery shells hit a shelter hut in the settlement of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) at Periyamadu in Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) controlled Mannaar Thursday around 11:00 a.m. The wounded mother was struggling to give sudden birth to her child killed in her womb and the IDPs who were helping the young mother, became victims of the second wave of artillery shelling. Nine IDPs, including the 3-year-old son of the pregnant mother, a couple, their 13-year-old daughter and two other children, were wounded in the artillery attack.
