Two Homeguards, one Ex-LTTE cadre shot dead in Vavuniya

Gunmen kill education office employee in Valaichenai

Kanagaratnam Lingeswaran, 29, a clerk from Vaharai Education OfficeParamilitary gunmen who entered the Education Office in Valaichenai shot and killed Mr. Kanagaratnam Lingeswaran, 29, a clerk from Vaharai Education Office, around 10:45 a.m., civilian sources said. The gunmen who shot the victim with handgun were covering their faces with helmets. Another official, Mr. A. Nagalingam, 53, was wounded in gunfire, education officials said.

Houses burn, as Tamil villagers flee in Muttur

Fourteen houses, eight shops, one tractor, five two-wheel tractors, three motorbikes belonging to Tamil people in Menkamam and adjacent Tamil villages in Seruvila division were burnt down by Sinhala thugs following the two claymore mine attacks on Sri Lanka government forces Friday morning and afternoon. Sinhala mobs forcibly entered Tamil houses in these villages, ransacked the houses and looted jewellery from Tamil women. Hundreds of Tamil families have started fleeing for safety seeking refuge elsewhere, sources from Killiveddy said.

Verugal PS councilors take oaths

The only local government institution, Verugal Pradesiya Sabah (PS) in the Liberation Tigers controlled area in the Trincomalee district began functioning with effect from Wednesday when all seven councilors of the PS returned uncontested in the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchchi (ITAK) ticket took oaths before a Justice of Peace in the presence of Mr.S.Elilan, LTTE Trincomalee district political head. Mr.Puratchi, Trincomalee head of the Thamileelam Students Department hoisted the Thamileelam National Flag, sources said.

Youth shot dead by SLA in Trincomalee

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers shot and killed a Tamil youth, Thursday morning near Kanniay village during a road patrol, sources said. The body is lying in Trincomalee hospital and has not been identified yet, hospital sources said. Meanwhile, a civilian has gone missing and another youth shot and injured by unknown gunmen in a separate incident in Trincomalee between Wednesday evening and Thursday, sources said.

Peer Mohamed Thamby administered oaths to the newly elected councilors of these PS in separate events the same day, sources said.

Mr. S.Gowrimuhunthan of Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchchi (ITAK) Thursday took oath as the Chairman of the twelve-member Trincomalee Urban Council and Mr. Kanthasamy Selvarajah Vice-Chairman. Mr.K.Sivapalan, senior attorney-at-law administered oaths to all the twelve members of the Trincomalee UC in Tamil language at an event held in Trincomalee Town Hall in the presence of religious leaders of all the four faiths, sources said.

2000 Tamils seek refuge in Kappalthurai School

Twelve-hour police curfew imposed in Trincomalee

Twelve-hour curfew was clamped on three police divisions of the Trincomalee district, Trincomalee town, Uppuveli and Chinabay with effect from Sunday evening at 6 p.m. to Monday morning 6 a.m. Earlier two divisions, Trincomalee and Uppuveli were brought under curfew. The Chinabay police division has been brought under curfew following reports that some members of resettled Tamil families in Kappalthurai were assaulted by soldiers of the Sri Lanka Navy following a claymore mine attack on Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) personnel Saturday night.

TRO supplies dry ration to Trincomalee victims

Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) in Trincomalee district Sunday commenced distributing dry ration relief to Tamil families who have sought refuge in schools and public buildings in the suburbs of east port town. About two hundred and fifty Tamil families fled in the Friday violence sought refuge in Anpuvallipuram Kalaimagal Vidiyalayam and Varothiayanagar Barati Vidiyalayam as thugs burned down their houses with other properties.

Dusk to dawn curfew has been enforced in Trincomalee town and its suburbs Varothianagar, Kanniya, Mihindupura Friday evening following the escalation of violence that erupted in Mihindapura, a suburb about five km off Trincomalee on Trincomalee-Anuradhapura road as a group of persons attacked houses of Tamil residents in the area following the discovery of a body of Sinhalese youth Nissanka who was reported missing from Thursday. The Police rushed more personnel to Mihindapura and other areas in Kanniya village where also several houses are reported burnt down by unruly mobs. Initial reports said a Hindu Nadesar temple and an NGO office, Aham, were burnt down in Mihindapura.

Three business owners, retired Police officer, shot dead in Thenmaradchi

Families fearing reprisals from the Sri Lanka military in Jaffna peninsula have again started moving into safer areas inside the Liberation Tigers controlled territories, passing the Muhamalai checkpoint after the reports of serial killings in SLA controlled Thenmaradchi sector of Jaffna district Thursday.

19 killed, 45 wounded, 20 shops burned in Trincomalee

The death toll in the Trincomalee town violence has risen to 19 with more than 45 wounded. Around 15 persons with serious wounds were being treated at Trincomalee hospital. Around 20 Tamil and 2 Muslim shops have been burnt down by thugs armed with incendiary devices assisted by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) troopers, said Trincomalee District TNA parliamentarian Thurairatnasingam. Widespread attacks on Tamils were reported after a bomb explosion in the town around 4:00 p.m where a Sri Lanka Army soldier was reportedly killed. Looting continued in the east port town where an indefinite curfew was clamped down by the Police.
