Tamil telecom engineer arrested in Colombo

A young Tamil civilian, telecommunication engineer by profession, was arrested Wednesday night around 10.30 p.m. by the Terrorist Intelligence Division (TID) of the Sri Lanka Police. Ten TID operatives went to his residence located at Rudra Mawatte in Wellawatte and took him for further investigation, according to a complaint lodged by his relatives with the Wellawatte Police Thursday.

SLA arrests 44 Tamil fishermen in Kalpity

Selvy, Tuesday said the Tamils were expecting the UN High Commissioner to visit the LTTE administered Vanni to get an absolute assessment of the Human Rights violations perpetrated by the Sri Lankan military and its paramilitaries in the Tamil homeland. Tamils, as a people, were disappointed as "the main violator, the Sri Lankan government itself," was exercising control over the itinerary of the visiting High Commissioner, Ms. Selvy said.

Abductions on the increase in Trincomalee

Eight Tamil civilians have been abducted during the first eight days of October in Trincomalee district, according to complaints received by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL). 27 Tamil civilians have been abducted in the month of September compared to 12 in August, HRCSL sources said.

Meanwhile, on Sunday a 25-year old family man went missing in Anthiraan, Kara'navaay West, Karaveddi Sunday.

UN Human Rights Commissioner arrives Tuesday for Sri Lanka visit

High Commissioner of Human Rights in the United Nations, Ms Louise Arbour, is to arrive in Colombo Tuesday on a five-day official tour to Sri Lanka. She is scheduled to meet relatives of abducted civilians in Colombo on October 11 and in Jaffna on October 12. She will be meeting government leaders, representatives of human rights institutions and political parties during her stay in Colombo.

On Monday, three civilians from Kayts, Chaavakachcheari and Point Pedro have sought HRC protection, civil sources in Jaffna said. A family man from Karaveddi was reported missing since Friday.

48 Tamils arrested in Wellampitya

Two more civilians in Jaffna peninsula, one of them a University student receiving death threats from paramilitary personnel, have surrendered to the officials at the Jaffna office of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) Wednesday. One of the protections seekers is from Chavakachcheari, Mirusuvil in Thenmaraadchi and the other is from Thunnaalai in Vadamaraadchi. There is a sharp increase in the number of receiving death threats from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops and SLA-backed paramilitary armed men.

Gotabhaya bans transport of livestock from abandoned Tamil homes in Batticaloa

Acting on a complaint made by Ameer Ali, Sri Lankan minister of disaster relief services, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the Sri Lankan defense secretary, has instructed teh Batticaloa district commanding officer of Sri Lanka Army (SLA), Superintendents of Police and officers of Special Task Force (STF) to ban the transport of livestock belonging to Tamils from the areas in Batticaloa district, recently brought under the control of the SLA. Tamils in these areas have repeatedly lodged complaint with Mr. Ameer Ali that cattle from their homes were being systematically stolen out of the district by paramilitaries and Sri Lankan soldiers and sold in Sinhala areas of the Polonnaruwa district.

Allaippiddi massacre witnesses fear travel to Jaffna

Witnesses to identify Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) personnel alleged to have massacred 13 civilians at Allaipiddy last year did not appear at Kayts Court Tuesday for fear of their lives, Attorney-at-law, S. Remedias, appearing on their behalf, informed Additional Magistrate R. T. Vignarajah at the inquiry into Allaipiddy massacre case. The witnesses, presently living in Ki'linochchi in Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) controlled area, fear to travel through Vavuniyaa and then sail from Trincomalee to Jaffna as they are afforded security only in Jaffna peninsula, the lawyer told the courts.

Grenade attack on SLA sentry post in Point Pedro

SLA authorities have not released any information about the attack.
