Thirty-three SLA wounded in Jaffna

SLA claims advantage on MSR

A senior commander of the Sri Lanka army (SLA) in Jaffna claimed today that his troops have recaptured the segment of the MSR that was controlled by the Liberation Tigers from March 27. Residents in Mirusuvil, however, said this evening that heavy fighting continues to rage on the A9. About 200 SLA soldiers were wounded and three tanks were damaged in fierce engagements near Muhamaalai today, according to SLA sources in Kodikamam.

SLA seeks Special Forces recruits

The commando regiment of the Sri Lankan army which is part of the SLA's elite 53 division called for new recruits today. The call for new recruits comes amidst reports that a large number of the 53 division's commandos have been put out of action due to constant deployment in special operations against the Liberation Tigers. The US Special Forces trained brigades of the 53 division have taken the brunt of the LTTE's Unceasing Waves III offensive since 2, November 1999.

25 arrested in search operation

At least 25 Tamil youths and young Tamil women were arrested during a combined search operation by the Sri Lanka Army soldiers and police in Keselwatte in down town Colombo, sources in Colombo said. The search began late in the night and continued till early hours of the morning today.

Bishop asked to mediate POW release

Sri Lanka's Minister for Ethnic Affairs, Mr.Jeyaraj Fernandopulle wrote to the Bishop of Mannar today requesting him to mediate the release of the Sri Lanka army soldiers held by the Liberation Tigers in the Vanni. Church sources in Mannar said that the Bishop is expected to leave shortly, once he obtains clearance to visit the Vanni.

Heavy fighting again in Jaffna

Residents in Mirusuvil, a village by the A9 highway southeast of Chavakachcheri, said that both sides are bombarding each other's positions with heavy volumes of mortar and artillery fire since morning.

Tigers take SLA uniforms, shoot soldiers

Military flight crashes

A LTTE field commander directing operations in this sector told residents that the camp is expected to fall by evening today.

The Sri Lanka Army said in a communique this morning that it pulled out its garrison in Maamunai under heavy fire from the Liberation Tigers. The press release states that one officer and thirty two soldiers were killed and hundred and fifty eight including six officers were wounded in the fighting so far. Battles continue in the general area east of Pallai in Jaffna's southern sector according to the SLA's communique.

Panicked soldiers shoot couple

A couple who were returning home from the Jaffna hospital with their new born child in an auto rickshaw were killed when the vehicle was hit by SLA fire at Iththaavil, 3 k.m north of Pallai around 2.30 p.m. today. The driver of the auto rickshaw was also killed on the spot.

Unceasing Waves III resumes - LTTE

The Sri Lanka Army suffered heavy casualties when the Liberation Tigers launched a "massive" sea and land assault in the Jaffna peninsula last night, the LTTE said in a press release from its London offices today. LTTE forces had overrun the SLA artillery base at Pallai destroying eleven artillery pieces and cutting the A9 supply route to the SLA bases at Elephant Pass and Yakachchi, the press release said. The SLA base at Yakachchi had been penetrated and fierce fighting was raging, it added.
