Flood victims, displaced students get assistance

The Lions Club has donated 10,000 US dollars to provide additional relief to the flood victims in Vavuniya, government officials said today. According to K.Ganesh, the Government Agent Vavuniya, 25,000 people were displaced due to torrential rains and floods in the area.

Land mine attack kills three

Floods recede

Flood waters are reported to be receding in several areas in the north and east, said a spokesman of Ministry of Social Services today. He said that incessant rains in the Trincomalee, Ampara, Vavuniya and Batticaloa districts had caused heavy flooding and left 28,000 people homeless.

Floods render 20,000 homeless

Heavy showers in the north and the east in Sri Lanka have caused severe flooding and have made several thousands homeless. A spokesman for the Ministry of Social Services said that 22,848 have been rendered homeless in the Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Polannaruwa and Ampara districts.

Eighteen detainees freed

Amnesty fears for Vavuniya missing

Amnesty International has expressed its concern about the disappearance of the eight Tamil youths and men who went missing in Vavuniya district between 27 October and 21 December 1998. The disappearances have been attributed to the Sri Lanka Army and members of the Peoples Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), said Amnesty, adding that most of the disappeared are internally displaced people.
