International Teachers Day celebration in Kalmunai draws thousands

International Teachers Day celebrations were held in Kalmunai, Wesley College grounds on Wednesday in a large scale involving Tamil, Muslim and Sinhala communities. About 2000 pre school teachers from Batticaloa and Ampara districts were taken in procession with pre school children's bands from Batticaloa district and Sinhala zones in Ampara district. The main banner leading the procession was carried by Muslim, Tamil and Sinhala Pre school teachers.

ICRC, Rights Experts meet LTTE delegation, NESOHR in Geneva

0A five member International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) team and another team of Swiss based Human Rights experts met with the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the LTTE and with NorthEast Secretariat on Human Rights (NESOHR) team in Geneva Tuesday. Later in the day, Human Rights lawyer Ms Karen Parker, conducted a session to the NESOHR members on Geneva Conventions on Human Rights as applied to post conflict situation, sources in Geneva said.

Resettlers receive houses built with World Bank funding

Ceremonial handing over of keys of new houses built with World Bank funding and organized by the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) was held in Ananda Nagar in Kilinochchi at 12.30 Tuesday. Local Non Governmental Organizations and private citizens provided additional funding support to the Rs.150,000 provided by the World Bank to build each house.

First LTTE medical service in SLA held area

0The medical services of the Liberation Tigers conducted free mobile clinics for civilians for the first time in areas controlled by the Sri Lanka military Friday. The program was inaugurated in Vavuniya by LTTE’s Thileepan medical services. Fifteen doctors led by Dr. Ezhumathi Karikalan provided medical services and advice to hundreds of people at the refugee camp in Poonthottam in the morning and later in Maharampaikulam in Vavuniya.

'Police acting partially'-Mannar MP

Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), the party of ultra Sinhala nationalist Buddhist monks, launched a signature campaign Tuesday in Kandy vowing to collect five million signatures against the Norwegian facilitation in the Peace Process. Venerable Omalpe Sobhitha Thera, the Deputy Leader of the JHU, addressing a meeting at the Central Market in Kandy, vowed that he personally would be campaigning for three days in Colombo, Kandy, Gampaha, Galle, Matara and Polannaruwa districts, sources said.

The delegation is expected hold discussions with legal and constitutional expert who formulated the Interim Self Government Authority proposals (ISGA), sources said.
