UN High Commissioner visits Kilinochchi

António Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), on Wednesday visited Kilinochchi, the de facto administration centre of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) administered Tamil territories and met with LTTE's Political Head, S. P. Thamilchelvan and M. Pavarasan, the Director of UN and NGO affairs of the Tamil administration, LTTE officials in Kilnochchi said.

UNHCR High Commissioner visits Sri Lanka

Mr. Antonio Guterres, the head of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees began a three-day visit Sri Lanka, Tuesday. The visit will be the first by a head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the country, where it has been working with conflict-displaced people since 1987, according to UN news centre.

SLA troopers kill two civilians following grenade attack

Contrary to claims by Sri Lanka Military sources that Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers shot dead two LTTE cadres in Urumpirai after a grenade attack on the SLA sentry at 3.00 p.m Tuesday, investigations conducted at the scene, the same night by Additional Magistrate Mr. Srinithi Nandasekeran revealed that the two men killed were innocent civilians, legal sources said.

TRO staffer recounts Army torture

Swedish Envoy meets LTTE Political Head

"The International Community should exert pressure on Colombo to put an immediate end to military campaign in occupied Tamil territories, respect the status-quo, implement the CFA and engage in talks," LTTE's Political Head S. P. Thamilchelvan told media after meeting Swedish Envoy Anders Oljelund at LTTE's Political Secretariat in Kilinochchi Friday. "The International Community should identify the one-sided exercises - the All Party Conference and the so-called expert panel - that are aimed at diverting attention from the real issues at stake," he further said.

Constitutional safeguards proved inadequate – High Commissioner

Britain’s trust in the safeguards built into the constitution of Ceylon at independence was misplaced and their weakness is to blame for the island’s present problems, the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Mr. Dominic John Chilcott, said in an interview with the Sunday Virakesari. In a wide-ranging interview last weekend, Mr. Chilcott said that LTTE and the Sri Lanka government must now negotiate an end to the conflict. The UK and the United States were in agreement on their policies on Sri Lanka, he also said, adding that India also wants a negotiated solution to the conflict.

EU special envoy to visit Killinochchi

Mr.Andres Oljelund, special envoy of the European Union (EU), will fly to Killinochchi in LTTE held Wanni region Friday, and hold discussion with the LTTE political leadership over the question of monitors of the EU member countries serving in the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), sources said. LTTE has given Royal Government of Norway until 1st September to replace the monitors from the Nordic countries Sweden, Denmark and Finland which are also members of the EU.

4 NEIAP officials wounded in DPU Claymore attack

Three officials of World Bank funded North-East Irrigated Agriculture Project (NEIAP) and the driver of their pickup vehicle, belonging to Mannar District Secretariat, were wounded in a Claymore carried out by the Sri Lanka Army Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) attackers in Kokupadaiyan, 28 km southeast of Mannar town, Thursday around 2:45 p.m. The incident took place on Slivathurai - Mullikulam Road between Kallaru and Kokkupadaiyan, civilian sources said. The officials escaped with minor wounds, medical sources said.

Three Tamil auxilliaries wounded in DPU Claymore attack

The Claymore attack was reported at 11:45 a.m. Thursday.

SLMM meets SLA soldier under LTTE captivity

Members of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) met with captive Lance Corporal Karunaratne at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at the LTTE's Thenaham building in Karadiyanaaru, LTTE sources in Batticaloa said. Karunaratne was captured by the Liberation Tigers during a clandestine cross border incursion of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) into LTTE held territory on early morrning of 14 July.

SLA shelling injures civilian in Vakaneri

Muttur east schools to conduct special session for IDP students

Classes for internally displaced students in Muttur east would be held in schools in the afternoon after the first session for students of the area in the morning. This decision has been taken at a discussion held in Ilankaithurai Muhathuwaram School in Eachchilampathu division Monday morning. Principals and teachers of schools now functioning in Eachchilampathu division participated in the discussion. The objective of the discussion was to provide uninterrupted education to internally displaced students from Muttur east coastal villages following continuous artillery fire by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), sources said.
