Arrested youth in Detention Center says HRC

Mylanthanai massacre case postponed

The case involving the massacre of 35 villagers of Mylanthanai in Batticaloa district on the 2nd of August 1992, scheduled to be heard yesterday in Colombo High Court, has been postponed for the 17th of March, said legal sources in Colombo. 21 soldiers stood accused of having committed the murders.

Two killed in fire-fight

A soldier of the Razeek group and a person suspected to be a member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was killed in a fire-fight with the Liberation Tigers in Batticaloa this morning when an ambush party of the special Tamil paramilitary unit of the Sri Lankan Army surprised a minor supply camp of the LTTE.

In this case eight soldiers of Sri Lankan army have been charged with the murder of 24 Tamil civilians and attempted murder of 26 Tamil civilians on 11.02.1996 at Kumarapuram of remote village in Muttur division about 20 miles, south of Trincomalee town.

Nine Tigers, supporter killed - VoT

Eight Liberation Tigers died in a clash with the Sri Lankan Army in the eastern Batticaloa district on October 22 said the Voice of Tigers (VoT). The radio also said another LTTE member, Maj. Suresh (Kanapathipillai Manivannan from Batticaloa) and Sinnathamby Thiyagaraja from Batticaloa, a supporter, died in an accidental explosion in the Amparai district on October 21.

Five fishermen reported missing

Five fishermen from Karanavai in Karaveddi in Jaffna have been reported missing since Wednesday October 7. The five men, according to sources, had gone from Karanavai on Tuesday October 6 to a relative's house in Maaniavalai in the Sempianpattu area; and on Wednesday Oct. 7 they had set out around 4 a.m. in the early hours of the morning to fish in the lagoon nearby. They have been missing since then.

Defence allocation rises

The Sri Lankan government's defence expenditure allocation has risen in the 1999 budget to 47 billion rupees (717 million USD), according to figures released in parliament yesterday. At the same time, the amount allocated for the implementation of official languages, 21.2 million rupees (321,000USD), is a significant reduction on the allocation under last year's budget.
