SLA deserter Surrenders

A deserter from the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) who was arrested and sent to operational areas of the Vanni surrendered to the Liberation Tigers, said the LTTE today. The Liberation Tigers added that the SLA soldier would be handed over to his parents according to his wishes through the International Red Cross Committee (ICRC).

SLA says finds LTTE member's body

SLA sources in Vavuniya said that they had recovered a body of an LTTE member who was killed in the yesterdays attack at Cheddikulam. The body was found when the SLA launched a search operation in the area, said the SLA sources. The body was later handed over to the Sri Lankan Red Cross (SLRC).

A long year on the road

Exactly one year ago, the Sri Lankan military began the largest military campaign in its history. Preceded by a massive artillery and aerial bombardment, over 20,000 Sri Lankan troops, led by elite Special Forces, broke out of their fortifications at Vavuniya and Manal Aru and pushed into the LTTE-controlled Vanni. The Sri Lankan government had much riding on the outcome of the operation, optimistically code-named 'Jaya Sikirui' ('Victory Assured' in Sinhala).

Poor response to latest amnesty
