Education Council supports Trinco Resurgence Convention

The Council for Advancement of Education of Trincomalee District (CAETD) Thursday issued a statement appealing to all students, parents and intelligentsia to attend the Tamil National Resurgence Convention (TNRC) scheduled to be held on Saturday in the east port town in full strength. "The Convention is being held to echo the legitimate aspirations of Tamil people to the international community and other parties concerned that Tamil people cannot be deprived of their right to self determination" said the statement.

Wickremasinghe addresses rallies in Trinco, Kinniya

Southern journalists donate learning materials

The group of southern journalists, including three Buddhist monks at the conclusion of their 4-day goodwill mission donated a consignment of goods, including learning and teaching materials, to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) at an event held at the Trincomalee district office of the TRO Tuesday morning. Southern journalists requested the TRO officials in Trincomalee to distribute these materials to war and tsunami affected students in LTTE held areas in the district.

The National Peace Council (NPC) of Sri Lanka organized this visit, sources said.

CTTU prepares for full-scale trade union action

About twenty thousand Tamil medium teachers including principals in the northeast province Wednesday did not report for duty sending a sick note responding to the call of the Ceylon Tamil Teachers' Union (CTTU) as a token protest against the government's failure to take prompt steps to implement several demands which included the immediate withdrawal of government troops located within fifty meters from schools and to hand over all schools which are located within the high security zones to the Department of Education.

Unidentified gunmen abduct prisoners in Muttur

Unidentified gunmen Tuesday morning around 10.55 a.m. waylaid a government passenger bus bound for Muttur town at 59th mile post on Muttur Batticaloa highway and abducted four suspects two Tamils and two Muslims who were taken by prison officials from Trincomalee remand prison to be produced in the Muttur Magistrate Court in connection with criminal cases. Later two Muslims suspects were freed but unidentified men took the Tamil suspects, Muttur Police said.
