SL military assassinated 3 ex-LTTE members after deception, entrapment

After getting the family members of the three slain ex-LTTE members in Nedungkea'ni to identify the victims, the Sri Lankan authorities have refused to hand over their dead bodies to the families to conduct a decent funeral. The family members who were allowed to identify the said the victims were shot in close range. Meanwhile, reliable sources in Vanni and Jaffna told TamilNet that they were not slain in a clash as the SL military has claimed, but caught in advance. It is believed that a Tamil person, who was working as the SL military intelligence officer at Kokkaavil camp in Vanni, was also slain in the sting operation. His identity is yet to be confirmed. The operation has been headed by an under cover operative now working for Sri Lankan military intelligence. He is known as Kalaiyan, an informed source told TamilNet Thursday.

Genocidal military deceives Tamil students in Jaffna, Vanni

The occupying Sri Lankan military is waging a targeted campaign in Jaffna and Vanni to deceive and recruit Tamil youth between 18 and 22 years to substandard assignments within the genocidal military. The SL military has been collecting the lists of students who didn’t succeed in their GCE (O/L) exams and is engaged in a targeted campaign, promising driver and data-entry jobs for 30,000 rupees a month. At some places Tamil schoolteachers are being forced to ‘encourage’ the students to enlist themselves in the military. The SL military officers coming from Palaali military base have been allowed into schools in uniform to conduct propaganda meetings.

Tamil traders in North protest against invading illegal salesmen from South

Jaffna District Chamber of Commerce and Tamil National Cultural Association on Thursday staged a half-day protest against invading illegal salesmen from South, who outcompete the native traders with the backing of the occupying Sinhala military. The protest drew the support of civil activists, Tamil politicians and the public as the provincial council and the civic bodies run by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Municipal Council administration run by the EPDP have been powerless in controlling the illegal activity which has also worsened the anti-social crimes in the peninsula. The street vendors from South market their goods at the doorsteps of the shops owned by Tamil traders in the city at cheaper rates, but without any warranties, the organisers told TamilNet.

SL military accelerates forced ‘resettlement’ permanently seizing lands from Tamils

The houses are to be handed over in a military function scheduled to be attended by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the SL presidential sibling and defence secretary of the occupying State, who has also instructed its military Establishment to get rid of the complaints from uprooted people from Valikaamam North in Jaffna district by forcing them to accept ‘alternative’ housing schemes being offered at quarry lands in Kaangkeasan-thu'rai after permanently seizing their fertile lands from them in 24 village divisions. Also, people from Champoor in Moothoor East in Trincomalee district, currently staying in the so-called welfare camps are being harassed to accept forced resettlement.

SL military ‘punishes’ families opposing forced conscription of Tamil women

More than 30 soldiers and intelligence personnel of the occupying Sri Lankan military, who came in 5 vehicles, rounded up the village of Ka'nukkea'ni in Tha'n'neer-oottu in Mu'l'liyava'lai of Mullaiththeevu district on Monday and arrested 28-year-old brother of a woman as the woman had refused to join the SL military. A Sri Lankan military commander was exerting pressure on the two survivors of a family, which lost both the parents and a sister in the genocidal onslaught on Vanni in 2009, to enlist the remaining girl. The ‘arrests’ come as the girl declined to enlist herself and her brother too opposed the SL military, news sources in Mullaiththeevu told TamilNet.

SL military rule stepped up in North, wartime restrictions re-introduced

In the meantime, the occupying Sri Lankan military has ‘arrested’ at least 44 Eelam Tamils between 07 March and 27 March, news sources in Jaffna said. Most of them have been arrested in abduction style. The iron fist control on the civilian life seeks to silence all activism and threatens the witnesses who have been prepared to witness against the genocidal crimes by the Sri Lankan State, rights activists in Jaffna told TamilNet. Civilian movement was at standstill during the nights as if a curfew has been clamped down at several locations of the peninsula.

SL military detains 28 Tamils in 2 weeks

Journalists in North receive death threats over phone

A section of Tamil journalists in North, who have been subjected to investigations and harassment by the Sri Lankan military intelligence in the recent past on Tuesday said they were receiving phone calls with death threats this week. The Sri Lankan military was using a projected image of ‘LTTE regrouping’ to silence the journalists and civil activists, especially during the 25th session of the human rights council in Geneva. In the meantime a top commander of the Sri Lanka Army has told a rights activist in Colombo that the whole Geneva discourse would end as the talk of USA sending ship to evacuate LTTE political leaders while brokering a surrender-deal at the end of Vanni war in 2009.

Genocidal Sri Lanka sends message to children and families voicing for their missing

The occupying Sri Lanka Army arrested a 13-year-old girl and her 48-year-old mother, the only remaining female members of a family that has lost three men in the war, two of them died in the war and the last one missing after he surrendered to the Sri Lanka Army at the end of war in 2009. The two traumatized victims were voicing for the release of the only male, whose whereabouts are not revealed by the SL military. The mother, Jeyakumari Balendren, went to LLRC and to all the protests and became a leading activist in mobilizing the families of the missing in Ki’linochchi district. The daughter Vipooshika became the symbol of young children searching for their loved ones. Now, Colombo has sent the mother to Boosa prison in South and the daughter to so-called ‘Juvenile Correction and Rehabilitation Centre’ in North through its judiciary.

Ananthi addresses UNHRC in Geneva on continued genocide against Tamils

Ms Ananthi Sasitharan, the popular TNA councillor of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) on Friday addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council's 25th session taking place in Geneva. She requested the UN system to take “bold steps in understanding the 60-year-long genocide and investigate it through an independent international investigation.” Addressing the UNHRCs General Debate, the 47-year-old mother of three told the Council that the children affected in any war spend a lifetime to recover from the impact. “But, the Eelam Tamil children face a continued war with genocidal intent,” she said urging “concrete actions to safeguard our children from becoming permanent victims to the genocide.”

Colombo stages 'LTTE regrouping' scene in Vanni

NPC minister condemns Colombo for twisting facts on Moongkilaa'ru victims

Weak resolutions embolden Colombo: civil society activist

The draft resolution to be tabled at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions this month in Geneva has not only disappointed the Tamils by failing to demand an international investigation, it has also failed to recognise the domestic failures despite two rounds of similar resolutions at the UNHRC in 2012 and 2013, said Tamil Civil Society Forum (TCSF) representative and Jaffna University law academic Kumaravadivel Guruparan this week at a press briefing to journalists in Jaffna. Pointing out four major flaws in the latest resolution and comparing the draft with the recent report by the High Commissioner of Human Rights, Mr Guruparan explained the positive and negative aspects of Navi Pillay's approach. The SL State has in fact been emboldened with the weak resolutions year by year, he said.

US draft stops at Navi Pillai inquiry into HR crimes of ‘both parties’

A draft resolution on Sri Lanka that is to be tabled at the UNHRC later this month by the USA, UK, Montenegro, FYR of Macedonia and Mauritius was put to circulation on Monday. Contrary to the trumpeting by sections among Tamils expecting US-UK justice through international investigation on war crimes, the draft just harps on OHCHR investigation into “alleged violations and abuses of human rights and related crimes by both parties in Sri Lanka.” On the other hand, the draft that fails in recognising Tamils even by name not only provides more space and time for the completion of their structural genocide but also binds the UNHRC with supporting the “unified land” of the genocidal State.

PTI twists report on Mannaar killing field

Projecting Sri Lankan Government's defensive cover-up statement on the exhumation of human skeletal remains from the killing field of Mannaar at Maanthai without any journalistic scrutiny, the Press Trust of India (PTI) on Wednesday published a news report titled ‘mass grave in former LTTE stronghold’. The report featured an open lie by the Sri Lankan state that the killing field was under LTTE control for 30 years. The mass grave site, situated near Maanthai junction, has been under the control of the occupying Sri Lankan military and was also used as a rear site of the SL military that uprooted the Tamil people from the area. So far, 81 human skeletons have been exhumed from the killing fields. The exhumation is scheduled to continue for the 32nd time on 03 March.
