Velanai residents want SLN's electric fence removed

The people of the Jaffna district feel that it is not an opportune moment to hold the twenty-ninth Sri Lankan National Sports Festival in Jaffna, when normalcy has not returned in the lives of displaced people and no concrete proposal has been furnished for the establishment of an interim administration in the Northeast province, said the LTTE’s Jaffna district sports division head, Mr.Mathulan, at a conference held at the Jaffna district secretariat Tuesday morning, sources said.

Remand for two LTTE members in Batticaloa

Mr.Chandradasa Jayaweera Paiyas alias Kulatheeparaj and Vadivelu Chandrakumar alias Prasanth, both from Vaharai, who are members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), were remanded Tuesday by the Batticaloa Magistrate on a charge under the Offensive Weapons Act of 1966 till July 22, legal sources said.

Jaffna’s GCE exam qualifying rate said among lowest in Sri Lanka

“The percentage of students who pass the General Certificate of Education (GCE) exams in the northeast is lower than in the other parts of the country. Among the 30 Educational Districts in Sri Lanka, the percentage was lowest in Jaffna until recently. However, the district has now managed to move up to the 28th-27th place ”, said Mr. S. Mahalingam, Provincial Director of Education addressing the annual prize giving function of the Vincent Girl’s High School in Batticaloa Tuesday. Students in Sri Lanka have to qualify the GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level exams to enter universities.
