Paramilitary abductions continue in Batticaloa, Amparai

Paramilitary Karuna Group men working with the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) abducted 15 Tamil civilians in Batticaloa and Amparai Districts within last two days, said Jeya, the Amparai District LTTE Political Head. He further said the incidents have been reported to the Sri Lanka Monitoring mission(SLMM).

Tamil youth abducted in Valaichchenai

Paramilitary Karuna Group abducted a Tamil youth of 4th Division, Vinayagapuram, Valaichchenai in Batticaloa District Thursday night at 8.20, civil sources said. Nesarasa Guruparan, 17, a mason, was resting at home when unidentified gunmen forcibly took him at gunpoint, according a complaint filed by Guruparan's mother with the Valaichenai Police.

EPDP cadre shot dead in Valaichchenai

A paramilitary cadre belonging to Eelam Peoples' Democratic Party (EPDP) was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Meeravodai, Valaichchenai, Wednesday night, sources in Batticaloa said. K Rajanikanth, 32, a father of two children, from 18th mile post Sunkankerni, was operating with the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops based at the nearby Kommanthurai SLA camp, according to sources.

Mobilization campaign against Violence and War

A series of mass meetings and broad mobilisation of people against violence and war, to be organized by the National Anti-war Front (NAWF) , will be held from the August 17th to 21st September 2006, said NAWF Chairman, Dr Kumar Rupesinghe, in a memorandum circulated to the media in Colombo Thursday. A press conference to publicize this campaign labelled "All-Together," is being held Thursday at 3.30pm at Nippon Hotel, Slave Island, Colombo.

He later met with Brigadier Amal Karunaratne, Senior Police Superintendent Maxie Proctor, and several security officials at 223 Brigade Headquarters in Batticaloa.

Kandasamy Govindarajah, 25, a resident of Meeravodai and one of the two Tamil civilians who were taken into custody in a cordon and search operation conducted by members of the para military with the security cover by soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Sri Lanka Police Monday afternoon around 3 p.m., was shot dead the same day night around 10 p.m. at 18th mile post in Kalodavi located about 27 km off north in Batticaloa town along Batticaloa-Valaichchenai main road, civil sources said.

LTTE cadre shot dead in Santhiveli

A Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadre was shot dead by Sri Lankan Army (SLA) troopers and paramilitaries hiding near the Santhiveli Kannaki Amman Temple, at 10 p.m. on Monday, said Dayamohan, Batticaloa district LTTE political head. LTTE cadre Kaaththamuththu Jeyananthan, 25, from Thikiliveddai, Santhiveli was going to Santhiveli village for political work when he was shot by SLA soldiers and paramilitary Karuna Group men, Dayamohan added.

Two houses set ablaze by paramilitaries in Batticaloa

Two houses located along Batticaloa-Kaluwankerni main road were burnt down by a paramilitary group working with Sri Lanka State security forces around 6.30 a.m., Monday. One house belonged to Mylvaganam Arumugam who is the sister of Gnanatheepan, the paramilitary Karuna group cadre who surrendered to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) after killing five Karuna group members, including Iniyabarathy, last year.

Claymore attack in Kandy, senior counter-insurgency officer killed

STF SSP Upul SeneviratneA senior commander of the Special Task Force (STF), the elite counter-insurgency arm of the Sri Lankan police, was mortally wounded Monday when his vehicle was ambushed by attackers with a claymore mine. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Upul Seneviratne was seriously wounded in the blast at Digana, 10 km southeast of Kandy, around 4:15 a.m. Monday. He succumbed to his wounds at Kandy hospital around 6:20 a.m., medical sources said. SSP Seneviratne had served in the eastern province, including as head of the STF in the region. On Sunday, another explosion was reported at Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Nihala Karunaratne's residence in Puttalam killing a police security official.

Jeyananthamoorthy MP's house attacked

Jeyananthamoorthy, Friday at 9:15 p.m. The parliamentarian, his wife and two children with their relatives, narrowly escaped the attack that caused damage to the roof of the house located in Batticaloa town. A policeman providing security was wounded in the attack.

Karunaratne was captured by the Liberation Tigers during a clandestine cross border incursion of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) into LTTE held territory on early morrning of 14 July.

One youth shot dead, two injured in Batticaloa

Unidentified men shot dead a youth and injured another Friday morning around 7.15 a.m. along Sivan Kovil Road at Sinna Urnai Gandhi Village in Batticaloa police division, sources in Batticaloa said. The suspects came in a three-wheeler and chased these two youths and shot at them. The injured had fled from the area, sources added.

0At least 12 Sri Lankan troopers were killed when Liberation Tigers confronted a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) unit, comprising at least 100 soldiers, that had moved 5 km inside LTTE controlled territory in Batticaloa district. Four LTTE cadres were killed and six wounded in the fighting in Vakaneri, 37 km northwest of Batticaloa town. The bodies of twelve SLA soldiers were recovered by the Tigers, P. Dayamohan, the Batticaloa district LTTE political head told TamilNet. One Lance Corporal of the SLA has been captured alive by the LTTE. SLA sources in Colombo claimed that a group of SLA soldiers who were on a search and clear operation have gone missing in Vakaneri.

Build coalition to support serious peace, Schaffer tells Colombo

To get the LTTE to the table, it will need to persuade the LTTE that eventual peace talks would be worthwhile," said Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington-based think tank, in a report released Wednesday. Former Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Teresita Schaffer, is the Director of South Asia programs at CSIS.
