Cancel violence marred polls says watchdog

The independent polls watch dog, the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) called on the Commissioner of Elections as voting drew to a close Tuesday afternoon to cancel the polls in eleven polling divisions where it said the "nature and extent of violence were so widespread and serious as to render the final outcome in these areas meaningless".

PA chief perpetrator of polls violence- watchdog

An independent body monitoring election violence in Sri Lanka said that the ruling party was the alleged perpetrator of 368 incidents, including arson and thuggery. According to a press release Tuesday by the Center for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV), the Police have acted in a partisan manner in favour of ruling People's Alliance candidates in the districts of Puttalam, Kurunagala, Moneragala, Gampaha and Kandy and that a Police officer had attempted to take action against ruling party supporters has been transferred from his post.

SLA assault repulsed -LTTE

An offensive assault by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in the Sarasalai area of the Jaffna peninsula was repulsed Friday with heavy casualties, the Liberation Tigers said in a statement from their London offices. Civilian settlements in Maduvil and Sarasalai had been hit by artillery and rocket fire, killing six civilians and wounding scores, the statement added.

Tamil Nadu fisherman dies in custody

Ms. Maheswary Velayutham, a human rights lawyer who went to see his body at the government hospital in Colombo today charged that he died due to neglect of the injuries sustained when SLN personnel assaulted him during arrest in the high seas.

“Human shields” at Madhu

The Liberation Tigers said today they had advanced into Sri Lanka Army(SLA) held territory on three fronts in Manal Aru (Weli Oya), Omanthai and Pallamadu areas in the eastern, central and western Vanni respectively. The LTTE said in a statement from its London offices that over 1000 SLA troops and 119 LTTE fighters had been killed so far.
