Woman shot dead in Thenmaraadchi

Unidentified gunmen arriving at the house of a young woman Wednesday around 2:30 p.m at Kaithadi North in Thenmaraadchi, shot and killed her, sources in Thenmaraadchi said. The woman who had to report at the local Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp every week and sign in a register there, had done so Wednesday morning, the sources added.

Opposition challenges war progress claims

Hours after a devastating Tamil Tiger attack on the Sri Lankan military’s headquarters in Vavuniya, the main opposition Tuesday questioned the government’s claims of progress in the war against the LTTE, press reports said Wednesday. “The Air Force base and the Police HQ of Vavuniya was attacked using heavy artillery. Radar defence system is completely destroyed. This happened in an area that government has always claimed has been liberated a long time ago, and cleared of any LTTE activity,” United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Lakshman Seneviratne was quoted by The Bottom Line newspaper as saying.

2 SLA killed in ambush in Ampaa'rai - LTTE

Liberation Tigers of Tamileelm (LTTE) officials in the East on Tuesday claimed that their a Tiger guerrilla unit triggered a land mine targeting Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers who were on road patrol in Bakmitiyawa, 30 km southwest of Ampaa'rai Tuesday morning around 9:05 a.m. Six SLA soldiers sustained injuries, they added.

SLA forms new battalion with marginally injured soldiers

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has formed a new battalion called Vanni Reinforcement Battalion this week by re-inducting marginally injured in infantry units in the war front, according to the Situation Report of the Sunday Times of September 7. The soldiers are being deployed for non-direct combat related tasks in Vanni.

Casualty toll: 85 SLA killed in Vannearikku'lam

085 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed in Vannearikku'lam and 280 wounded in the fighting on Monday and Tuesday, according to informed sources close to the hierarchy of the Sri Lankan military. Meanwhile, Jayaratna florist, one of the leading florists in Colombo, took in charge 56 remains of SLA soldiers on Wednesday, before the 29 dead bodies handed over by the Tigers had reached Colombo. The high toll was not anticipated by the top brass of the SLA, which deployed elite Special Forces (SF) with high-powered rockets and explosives during the offensive push at Vannearikku'lam on Monday.

LTTE: 8 SLA soldiers killed in Vavuniyaa front

Unknown persons triggered a Claymore device killing a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier and injuring several others Wednesday around 1:00 p.m at Kappooothu area in Charasaalai, Thenmaraadchi. The attack targeted a SLA vehicle transporting soldiers from Kanakam Pu’liyadi Chanththi SLA camp to Kappoothu SLA camp along Chaavakachcheari-Point Pedro main road, sources in Chaavakachcheri said. Meanwhile, a beheaded body of a civilian was found in the very same area Wednesday morning, the sources added.

Tigers locate 29 SLA bodies, 75 SLA killed, 100 wounded in Vanni

Fighting at Vannearikku'lam on 02 September, 2008 [Photo: LTTE]The Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam, on Wednesday recovered further 10 dead bodies of the SLA soldiers, in addition to the 19 bodies handed over to the ICRC, from the battlefield after Tuesday's heavy fighting on two fronts in Vanni. 45 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed and more than 51 wounded in Naachchikkudaa when Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) confronted the SLA in a stiff fighting throughout Monday night, and on Tuesday, 30 more SLA soldiers were killed and 50 wounded in another front, between Akkaraayan and Vannearikku'lam, where Tiger fighters fought against the SLA from 5:30 a.m. till 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, LTTE officials in Vanni told TamilNet.

4 STF killed, arms seized in Ampaa'rai - LTTE

Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam officials in Ampaa'rai on Tuesday claimed four Sri Lankan Special Task Force (STF) soldiers were killed and two wounded at Sannasi malaiyadi near Ukanthai, bordering Ampaa'rai and Hambantota districts, Tuesday around 12:30 in a Tiger guerrilla ambush. A Colt Commando rifle and a T-56 assault rifle with ammunitions were seized by the Tigers, they said. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan police said one STF sergeant and a home-guard were killed at a police point at 10th mile post in Paa'nama area.

LTTE confronts SLA, recovers 7 bodies

Claiming that the SLA advancement was thwarted, the Tigers said they have located at least 7 bodies of SLA soldiers who were killed in action.

SLA to issue special ICs for Govt., NGO staff in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) are planning to issue special identity cards to the officers and employees of government departments, banks and the local staff of International and local Non-government organizations, the SLA announced through a radio broadcast from Palaali military head quarters. The military is the first stage in the SLA plan of issuing SLA special identity cards to all Jaffna residents, civil society sources in Jaffna said.

NGO vehicle narrowly escapes DPU Claymore attack in Vanni

Tamileelam police officials charged that the SLA has stepped up Claymore attacks on civilian vehicles in Vanni in a bid to terrorise the people of Vanni. The NGOs and the UN agencies have become under pressure from the Sri Lankan government, which is pressurising a move to force people to vacate LTTE administered areas.

LTTE fighters have seized 7 T-56 automatic rifles and recovered 3 dead bodies of SLA soldiers after heavy fighting. The Tigers claimed that at least 20 SLA soldiers were killed and more than 32 wounded in the clashes. Heavy fighting ensued also in Vannearikku'lam where the SLA sustained casualties.

10 SLA deserters escape from custody

Ten deserted soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) escaped from the Pelawatte SLA camp in Akuragoda, located near Colombo, on Friday while being detained for further inquiry. The deserters were arrested by the military police of the SLA and handed over to the police for follow up action, sources in Colombo said. They were later arrested by the Sri Lankan military police.

200 SLA soldiers in hospital with food poisoning in Ampaa'rai

LTTE air strike on Trincomalee harbour - SLN

Heavy explosions rocked the Trincomalee Harbour around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and again at midnight. The Sri Lanka Navy sources have confirmed that at least one LTTE aircraft had dropped bombs, but refused to comment on the casualty details. Tension prevailed in Trincomalee town Tuesday night from about 9.05 onwards as Sri Lankan forces surrounding the Sri Lanka Navy headquarters located along the Trincomalee harbor continuously fired towards sky for about half an hour following the alleged attack. The city was deserted. 11 Sri Lankan soldiers have been admitted at Trincomalee hospital. Explosions were heard again at midnight.
