UNHCR gets Australia's support to help NE IDPs

Thousands affected by floods in NE

Kuchchaveli IDPs urge speedy resettlement

Hundreds of displaced Tamil families from villages in Kuchchaveli division, 34 km north of the Trincomalee district and now residing in refugee camps elsewhere Sunday said that they should be resettled in their areas without delay and should be provided with necessary facilities. They attended a meeting held Sunday at Kuchchaveli Vivekanandan Maha Vidiyalayam where the resettlement of the displaced and their rehabilitation were discussed.

Tigers help IDPs resettle in high security zone

In scores of other schools and places of worship in the northern peninsula the Sri Lankan armed forces have vacated only buildings but are camped in or around the same locations. The Sri Lankan government agreed to pull out its armed forces from schools and places of worship in the island’s Northeastern province when it signed a ceasefire agreement (CFA) with the Liberation Tigers in February 2002.

Saddened that he didn’t join LTTE says PA MP

SL Minister slates island military

China pledges to assist rebuilding north

The Chinese government Friday promised that it would offer financial assistance to rebuild houses destroyed by war in the Jaffna district. "My government is developing a rehabilitation programme for implementation in the north," said Chinese ambassador in Colombo, Mr.Jiang Quizheng, addressing a conference at the Jaffna district secretariat Friday. The Ambassador during his visit to Jaffna inspected the Point Pedro jetty, which is in the high security zone of the Sri Lanka Army.

SLA says no to IDP resettlement in Vavuniya north

The Defence Secretary said Saturday that immediate resettlement of displaced families in areas close to high security zone in Vavuniya district is impossible. However, at the request of Defence Secretary Mr. Austin Fernando, it was agreed at the conference held Saturday at Vavuniya district secretariat that a committee comprising government and security officials and Liberation Tigers leaders should submit a report regarding resettlement within two weeks, after visiting the areas.

Sri Lanka's Ports Development and Eastern Regional Development Minister Rauff Hakeem Saturday handed over a cheque for a sum of three and a half million rupees to the Government Agent, Trincomalee as a token gesture for the resettlement of five hundred displaced families in the village Thiriyai in the northern sector of the Trincomalee district. Presiding over a conference regarding the development of the Trincomalee district Saturday, Mr.Rauff Hakeem said his ministry would take steps to resettle another two thousand displaced families in the eastern district.

IDPs find skeletons near SLA camp

Displaced persons clearing land for resettling near a Sri Lanka Army camp in Nunavil in Jaffna found a bag Monday morning with several human skeletons without skulls. There were some pairs of slippers too in the bag, residents said. The remains are beleived to be of local residents who were killed during Sri Lanka Army operations in the area two years ago, according to them.

Legal aid plan for internally displaced
