Hartal in Sammanthurai to protest killing of bodyguard

In response to the call by the Sammanthurai Majlis Assurah, residents of Sammanthurai division in Amparai district Tuesday observed general shut down condemning the killing of Mohideen Bawa Nizar, a bodyguard of Mr.Anwer Ismail, Minister of Irrigation and Amparai district parliamentarian two days ago, and to protest against killing of Muslim civilians in the North East, sources said.

SL President Rajapakse addresses APC, Expert panel

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse, Tuesday morning addressed All Party Representative Committee on Constitutional Reforms and the Panel of Experts at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, parliamentary sources in Colombo said. Without spellingout specifics Mr Rajapakse laid a broad framework for the APC to begin work, saying, "The international community, notably India and the Co-Chairs have endorsed our approach - a solution to the national problem must exclude any division of the country," and wished the committee success in "formulating a political and constitutional framework for the resolution of the national question."

Medical condition of Tamil woman prisoner serious, MP tells SL President

Kajendran in a letter sent to Sri Lanka's President Rajapakse on 7th July, sources close to the parliamentarian said.

Former Divisional Secretary remembered

The services rendered by Mr.M.Faleel, former Divisional Secretary, were recalled at a memorial event held Sunday evening at Natpiddimunai in Kalmunai division, his home village, sources in Batticaloa said. Mr.Faleel was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on December 4 last year when he was serving as the Divisional Secretary of Kattankudy in Batticaloa district, sources said.

Two Tamil youths shot dead in Mannar

Two youths were shot dead by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers Monday morning in Mannar district in two separate incidents during a cordon and search operation. During peace negotiations in South Sudan, Northern Ireland, Montenegro and Bougainville, the international community did not set "united country" as a pre-negotiation parameter for the expected outcome of a negotiated solution. The international community's stand that solution to the Tamil national question should be found within a united Sri Lanka, runs contrary to the current international practice, and to the law of self-determination, argued Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran, legal advisor to the Liberation Tigers, in a paper presented at a conference held in Zurich in April. The paper was released by the organizers, the Centre for Just Peace and Democracy (CJPD), Sunday.

UNP to re-evaluate support to UPFA, Rajapakse

Members of Swiss Tamils Women's Association held a protest rally in front of UNICEF offices in Zurich Monday against the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) violence on women in NorthEast, Tamil sources in Switzerland said. The protesters appealed in a Memorandum addressed to the Government of Switzerland and UNICEF to condemn the SLA violence, and to pressure the Government of Sri Lanka to take steps to stop the violence immediately, spokesperson Nirmala Pararajasingham said.
