Independent report verifies SLN complicity in Pesalai violence

Burnt out wadiyas (Photo: CPA/INFORM)In a report filed by a fact finding mission from two Colombo-based NGOs to look at the Pesalai violence of 17 June 2006, the investigators said, "Although in the initial days following the attack the government laid the responsibility for the attacks at the door of the LTTE, the strong report compiled and widely disseminated by the Bishop of Mannar pointed directly to Navy involvement. None of the many we met had the slightest doubt on this issue." The report also details the background to the prevailing ground situation in Mannar, urgent efforts required to prevent escalation of tensions, and provide security to the poor fisher families in Mannar.

Two women arrested by SLA in Vavuniya

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers at the Veppankulam, Vavuniya sentry point arrested two Tamil women at 4 p.m. Monday on suspicion of having links with the Liberation Tigers, Vanni parliamentarian Sivanathan Kishor said. The two women were arrested when they were returning from Chettikulam after attending to registration issues regarding their housing in Maharambaikulam, the parliamentarian said.

Two SLA troopers injured in Jaffna attacks

TRO worker abducted in Valaichchenai

Krishnapillai Kamalanathan, an official of the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) was abducted by members of the Karuna paramilitary group at Valaichchenai, about 30 km. north of Batticaloa, around 10.30 a.m., Sunday. Krishnapillai has been working as a child protection officer of the TRO, Vakarai division.

Abducted Tamil civilian killed in Muttur

Mr.Sivasubramanian Suvakaran (40) alias Raju who was abducted by unidentified men Saturday morning at Navalady junction in the Muttur town located close to the police station was found dead with gunshot injuries in a playground at Knox Road in Alimsenai in Muttur town. Muttur Magistrate Mr.Manickavasagar Ganesharajah on receipt of police report visited the site and viewed the body, police said.

Three NorthEast families receive medical assistance

Jeyarajah family with 2 month old Jenosan receiving Rs.400,000Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), through its special medical service unit, during the last two weeks, provided financial assistance of Rs. 570K to three disadvantaged families in the NorthEast to facilitate the sick members to undergo costly medical treatment, officials of the TRO said. TRO is a non-Governmental Organization (NGO) registered with the Government of Sri Lanka and is engaged in rehabilitation work mainly in the north east.

Abductions escalate in Muttur- Elilan

Six thousand civilians complete training in Muttur east

0The graduation ceremony for about six thousand villagers who have completed their training under the civilian volunteer force programme in the LTTE-held Muttur east villages was held Friday evening at Sri Senbaga Maha Vidiyalyam grounds in Eachchilampathu division in the Trincomalee district. "Sinhala government in the south has shown its unwillingness to respect the legitimate rights of Tamil people. We are forced to strengthen ourselves with the support of Tamil people under the leadership and guidance of our national leader to move the liberation struggle vigorously forward," said Mr. S. Elilan, LTTE Trincomalee district political head, in a speech at the event, LTTE sources said.

TRO urges SL Government to release lorry driver detained by SLA

Sri Lanka Army and Police personnel, on Thursday, detained a lorry transporting 22 boat engines from Trincomalee Tamil Rehbilitation Organisation's office to TRO's "Back to Work," an "Emergency Italy" funded post-tsunmai rehabilitation project in Punochchimunai, a Muslim village, in Batticaloa District. TRO, on Saturday, appealed to the Government of Sri Lanka, the international humanitarian community and human rights organizations for the release of the lorry, the driver and the outboard engines.

Tamil youth abducted in Muttur

A twenty five year old Tamil youth Mr.Raju was abducted by unidentified persons Saturday morning around 11:00 a.m. at Navalady in the heart of Muttur town when he was on his way to Muttur jetty, Muttur police said. The abducted youth was a resident of Ralkuli, an area controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and a labourer working in ferry plying between Navalady and Ralkuli, sources said.

SLA kills youth in Chenkalady

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers shot dead a Tamil civilian at 6:00 p.m. Friday in Chenkalady near the Bank of Ceylon building area in Eravur Police division, police said. Witnesses said the SLA soldiers first shot Gnanasekaram Santhiran, 30, in his head, and after he fell to the ground, shot him at close range.

Police registration made mandatory to Hill Country, Colombo Tamils

0Sri Lanka Government announced that Tamils living in Colombo and suburbs, and in hill country will be required to register with Sri Lanka Police nearest to their residences, in a Press conference held in Colombo district Administrative Secretariat, sources in Colombo said. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Pujitha Jeyasundera, detailed the procedures to be followed by Tamil residents in fulfilling this new requirement.
