UN fact-finding team in Jaffna

A team of four persons representing UNHCR, UNICEF, Sarvothaya, Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Sri Lanka and Child Protection Authority of Sri Lanka arrived in Jaffna Monday on a fact-finding mission with the aim of submitting a special report to the UN Security Council’s Action Committee regarding the deteriorating child rights situation in the Peninsula, civil society sources in Jaffna said.

Bus bomb kills 16, wounds 27 civilians in Amparai

Sixteen civilians including ten women were killed and 27 wounded when a bomb exploded inside a bus at the Sri Lankan military check post at Kondaivedduvaan, as its passengers were getting down to be checked, 4 km west of Amparai town Monday around 12:30 p.m., Police officials in Amparai said. One female police constable and a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) trooper were among those killed.

STF shoots dead two youths in Amparai

Three troopers from Kanthuvil Special Task Force (STF) were injured when unidentified men attacked a road patrol unit at Sankaman on the border of Amparai district Sunday around 7:45 p.m, sources in Amaparai said. Two of the attackers were killed when the STF retaliated, according to STF sources.

Allaipiddy case stalls in Kayts Courts

0The progress in Allaipiddy murder case, where five members of the same family were allegedly massacred by soldiers of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), has stalled in Kayts District Courts due to lack of co-operation from the Attorney General's (AG's) Department, lawyers associated with the case said. Hearings that were to take place on the 30th of August 2006, were finally held on the 14th March Wednesday, after several postponements due to the break out of violence in August last year.

Condition of fasting prisoners worsens

The condition of 43 Tamil political prisoners on hunger strike for the third consecutive day in Welikada Prison is fast deteriorating, prison officials said. The prisoners have been held in Welikade for more than a year without charges. The prisoners are demanding immediate release or be provided bail, and their cases be transferred to courts in their own districts, relatives of the prisoners said.

TNA MPs visit Tamil political prisoners

The prisoners who had begun a fast-to-death campaign on 21 February had called off their action temporarily on February 26 following TNA parliamentarians' assurance to assist them.
