STF orders shops closed in Batticaloa as punishment

"Special Task Force (STF) troopers went around the markets in Arayampathy and Kalavanchikudy areas in Batticaloa district Thursday around 12.30 p.m, assaulting many traders and forcing them to close their shops for five additional days, as punishment for their current two day voluntary shop shut down as a mark of respect for Col. Ramanan, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Deputy Commander of Batticaloa district, who was killed on Sunday" said Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian P. Ariyanenthiran.

Rising number of displaced makes CFA meaningless - Elilan

Policeman shot dead in Kallady, Battticaloa

Sri Lanka gambles on EU ban taming Tigers

Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapakse this week hailed the expected proscription of the Liberation Tigers by the European Union next week, saying it would compel the LTTE to the negotiating table and Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera called on Middle Eastern countries to also proscribe the LTTE. But the LTTE warns that further proscriptions will precipitate the objective conditions for renewed war.

SLA detains two youths in Karaveddy

Two youths who were waiting at a bus stop at Puraporukki along Jaffna Point-Pedro road in Karaveddy were arrested by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers during a search operation Thursday, local residents said. The youths were immediatley flown to Palaly military base. The SLA authorities in Jaffna said the troops launched a search in the area after they recovered a claymore mine on Jaffna- Pt.Pedro main road, around 10 a.m., Thursday.

Mannar Dialog telecom users under SL Military surveillance

A Special Telecommunication technical team from Sri Lanka Security forces Thursday morning was seen upgrading Base Transceiver Station (BTS) equipment belonging to Dialog Telecom located under the telecom-tower in Mannar, sources from Mannar said. The work was carried under heavy security and was believed to facilitate closer monitoring of a section of cellular users.

LTTE FDL commander dies in accidental explosion

Lt. Col. Veeramani, a former Commander of the Charles Antony Regiment of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and later a field commanding official, responsible for the Nagarkovil Forward Defence Line (FDL) points, Wednesday night succumbed to his wounds from an accidental explosion, LTTE officials in Kilinochchi said. Lt. Col. Veeramani, who recovered from earlier wounds in the battlefield, has been in charge of FDL points in Nagarkovil.

Magistrate orders for police report on Tamil civilian killing

Muttur Magistrate Mr.Manickavasagar Ganesharajah Wednesday ordered the Muttur Police to submit a full report on the killing of Mr.T.Chandran of Pallikudiruppu. The Magistrate further directed the police to record statements of persons in the army sentry located along Pallikudiruppu-Thoppur road as the body of the dead civilian was found in front of the army sentry, legal sources said.

SLA arrests son taking coffin to father's funeral

Mr. Thavithu Robinson, 27, of Iranaithivu-Pooneryn was arrested by soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Wednesday around 11 a.m. at Uyilankulam checkpoint located on the border of SLA and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) controlled areas in Mannar district when he was transporting coffin for the funeral of his father Mr.Madutheen Thaveathu (David), 57, who died Tuesday in his home village Iranaimathanagar in Mulankavil. He was taken into custody by the army for allegedly possessing a T-56 live bullet, security sources said.

Tamil civilian killed in Thoppur

An aircraft was seen circling over Wednesday from 10 a.m to 12.00 p.m, said LTTE sources in Amparai.

The shooting followed an attack on the SLA patrol unit on the Badula road near the Black Bridge, said sources in Batticaloa. The SLA retaliated with mortar attack and gunfire for 20 minutes, added the sources.

Tamil schools receive circulars, official communications in Sinhala
