Tigers, SLA open for new year's eve

The Liberation Tigers and the Sri Lanka army will keep the entry points to Jaffna and the Vanni open until 9.30 p.m. on New Year eve as a gesture of goodwill, officials on either side of the line of control in northern Sri Lanka said Wednesday. The International committee of the Red Cross left its position on either side of the no man's land at the Muhamalai entrypoint in Jaffna at the usual closing hour.

SLA closes Muhamalai point at usual time

Sri Lanka army closed the only entry point to Jaffna on the A9 highway at the usual hour on Wednesday evening despite the announcement by the Liberation Tigers that they would have their side of the border open until 9.30 p.m. for the convenience of people travelling to the peninsula on Christmas Eve and Christmas. A Sri Lanka army officer at the SLA’s Muhamalai entry point told TamilNet’s Jaffna correspondent Wednesday evening that there were no orders from his high command to reciprocate the LTTE’s gesture for Christmas and New Year.

Tigers to open more hours for X’mas , New year

The Liberation Tigers will keep their entry points to the Vanni open until 9.30 p.m. for Christmas and New Year for the convenience of the people during the festive season, Mr. Daya Master, the LTTE spokesman told TamilNet Tuesday. The entry points are normally open from 7 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. The LTTE’s entry points at Muhamalai, Puliyankulam and in Mannar would be open to the public until 9.30 p.m. on 24 and 25 of and 31 December and on 1 January 2004.

SLA prevents student leader from entering Kilinochchi

SLA threatens Jaffna journalist

The military intelligence unit of the Sri Lanka army at the Muhamalai entry point in Jaffna Wednesday stopped the journalist, Mr. Velupillai Thavachelvam, for more than an hour, threatening and accusing him of casting aspersions on the SLA in the northern peninsula deliberately. According to Mr. Thavachelvam, the soldiers who threatened him had said: “People like you had a free run under (Prime Minister) Ranil’s government. But now the President is in charge. So we can do anything to you”.

Destruction of coconut trees continues despite MoU

HRC to hold inquiry into LTTE's complaint

SLA, Police conduct search operations in Vadamaradchy

Compensation sought for plantations destroyed by SLA

Civilian robbed at Muhamalai checkpoint

The Sri Lanka Army Monday agreed to hold an identification parade to identify the army soldier who is alleged to have robbed cash from a Tamil civilian at the Muhamalai checkpoint on his way to Jaffna from Mullaitivu through the A-9 highway, and at the intervention of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, the 55th Brigade officials of the SLA later agreed to hold an identification parade, HRC sources said.

Halo Trust demining group at work in Jaffna
