SLA, LTTE engage in artillery fire in Kadjuwatte

2 fishermen reported "missing"

Two fishermen have been reported "missing" in the Vadamaradchi, according to compalints made with the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna. The fishermen were last seen while they were being interrogated by Sri Lanka Army soldiers at a check post, according to eyewitnesses.

SLA sustains heavy losses in fresh offensive

Sri Lanka’s military launched a ground offensive Saturday against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) territory in the northern Jaffna peninsula, after bombarding the area for two days. At least 25 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed and around 125 wounded, informed military sources said. Wounded soldiers in more than five busses were rushed to Palaly and airlifted elsewhere for treatment. The artillery attacks ceased around noon as SLA forces were evacuating the wounded troopers.

The International agencies present in Jaffna are yet to voice their concerns for the increased dissappearances of children in Sri Lanka Army controlled Jaffna district, according to civil society leaders in Jaffna.

Police bus damaged in claymore explosion, no casualty

A bus carrying about twenty policemen from Madawachchi to Anuradhapura was ambushed Monday morning around 10:30 a.m. at Ikkirigollawa in the Anuradhapura district. The claymore mine which was fixed on a tree along the road was detonated but it missed the target, police sources said.

SLA intensifies search operations in Jaffna

Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers cordoned off several hamlets in Karaveddy area in Vadamaradchi and conducted a search from Sunday noon till evening. Around 600 villagers were herded to a tempel and were interrogated in front of of masked spotters. Three have been detained for further intorrogation, villagers said.

NGO official, mother gunned down in Jaffna

Planning officer attached to Tsunami reconctruction project of the Sewalanka, a non governmental organization, was shot dead at his home in Karaveddy in Jaffna, around 8:45 p.m., Friday. His 55 year-old mother, who attempted to block the killers, was also killed by the armed men. The NGO officer's wife and his brother have been admitted at the Manthikai hospital with injuries, sources said.

A Sri Lanka Army Lance Corporal was killed and five troopers wounded in a Claymore blast when a group of SLA soldiers on a road clearing patrol were ambushed near Karaveddy Predeshiya Sabha (PS) office in Vadamaradchi, around 7:45 a.m., Friday. SLA announced over its radio that curfew has been re-imposed in Vadamaradchi sector from Friday noon and launched a cordon and search operation in Karaveddy. Several civilians were assaulted by the soldiers following the attack. Tension prevails in Vadamaradchi.

One soldier injured in Vadamaradchchi, Tamil youth shot dead in Kopay

Following a claymore explosion at Idaikkadu in Nelliyadi in Jaffna-Point Pedro Road Thursday soldiers manning the gateways to Vadamaradchchi, Vallai, Mulli in Kodikamam, and Aayam in Chavakachcheri road prevented the movement of about one thousand civilians for about three hours. SLA did not allow the movement of about hundred vehicles. One SLA sodleir was injured in the explosion.

Fisherman shot and hacked to death in Valaichchenai

A Tamil civilian Periyathamby Veluppillai, 27, a fisherman by profession and a father of two children of Kalmadu in Valaichchenai police area, was shot and hacked to death by soldiers of the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) and paramilitaries on Tuesday night around 8.00 p.m at Koraweli Road, Kannahipuram in Batticaloa district. He had been residing in 50 Housing Scheme in Kalmadu.

Sampoor battle: toll mounts

Sri Lankan military Tuesday continued its new offensive for the second day against the Tamil Tiger controlled region of Sampoor in the Trincomalee district. Around 50 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers had been killed and 108 wounded so far, LTTE officials claimed Tuesday afternoon. They said 12 LTTE fighters have been killed and 15 injured. But the military says it has killed 66 Tigers and lost 13 troops. A civilian, wounded on Monday, succumbed to injuries Tuesday. 21 fleeing IDP's have been killed during the past 30 hours in artillery and aerial bombardment, according to LTTE officials.
