One youth killed, two SLA troopers seriously injured in Vavuniya

Unidentified persons triggered a claymore device Sunday at Maharambaikulam in Vavuniya seriously injuring two Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers, Vavuniya police said. The police also claimed that a youth who is said to have triggered the claymore device died when a hand grenade he had on him exploded after having escaped from the site of the claymore attack.

SL Police raids TRO Colombo office

Sri Lankan Police, without producing any warrant, raided the Colombo office of the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation Saturday morning and searched the office, NGO officials at the TRO office in Colombo told media. The raid on Colombo office by the CID, follows after the raids on Vavuniya and Trincomalee offices Friday. "The continuous harassment of TRO is having a tremendously negative impact on the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the affected people of the NorthEast," the TRO, the only organization working in some of the most severely affected parts of the NorthEast, said in a press statement Saturday.

Unidentified armed men opened fire Friday around 10:45 a.m at Sector 3, Thalikulam on Mannar road in Vavuniya on policemen staying in a temporary camp, killing one policeman on the spot and seriously injuring another, Officer-in-charge of Vavuniya police, Kumara Chanthanayake said. The injured policeman was rushed to Vavuniya hospital and later transferred to Anuradapura hospital for further treatment.

0Two Agriculture Department officials were killed and 2 wounded Friday morning when a vehicle belonging to the department, transporting fruit plants, was hit by a Sri Lankan Deep Penetration Unit Claymore mine blast around 8:45 in Nedunkerni, 37 km northeast of Vavuniya. One of the two Claymore mines, triggered by the DPU attackers, exploded. Sri Lanka Army launched an artillery attack, firing around 25 shells towards the attack site, after the Claymore explosion.

Soldiers from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Vavunathivu camp fired mortar and artillery shells from 5:10 a.m Tuesday on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) held areas in Vavunathivu in Batticaloa, sources from Batticaloa said. SLA spokesperson Prasath Samarasinghe said the attack was retaliation to the LTTE artillery fire on Vavunathivu SLA camp areas from 5:45 a.m to 6:45 a.m Tuesday. He added that one SLA trooper was injured in the LTTE attack.
