Two police officers seriously injured in claymore attack in Vavuniya

Unidentified persons triggered a claymore device Tuesday around 9:30 a.m at Thonikal area in Vavuniya, seriously injuring two police constables in an attack, targeting a police road patrol unit, Vavuniya police said. The injured were rushed to Vavuniya hospital first and then transferred to Anuradapura hospital for further treatment.

Child Protection Authority empowered - LTTE Political Wing

The LTTE Political Wing, in a press statement issued on Friday, said the Tiger leadership had taken decisive steps to stop the practice of underage recruitment. The Tigers have strengthened the Child Protection Authority with certain powers to investigate future allegations of underage recruitment and to take immediate action to release them, the statement said. The statement also made reference to Tamileelam Child Protection Act 2006 (Act No. 03 of 2006), which was enacted in October by the Tamileelam legislatature, making education compulsory upto grade 11. The Act has outlawed recruitment of under-17s and participation in combat of under-18s.

Governor orders de-merger steps, keeps Trincomalee separate

The Governor of the North Eastern Province, Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama, with exclusive powers delegated on him by the Sri Lankan President, has ordered the officials of the NorthEastern Provincial Council (NEPC) to split the unified administration of NEPC into two separate administrations, breaching the core aspect of the 1987 Indo Lanka accord. One administrative unit is to be set up in Vavuniya, to look after the affairs of the Northern Province and the other unit is to be located in Kalmunani to administer the Eastern Province, excluding Trincomalee district, which is to be under direct rule of the Governor and the GA, both ex-military officials posted to civil positions.

SLA, LTTE clash at Vavuniya FDL

Liberation Tigers clashed with Sri Lanka Army troopers who attempted to move beyond the no-go zone towards Puliyankulam at Omanthai Forward Defence Line in Vavuniya district around 2:00 p.m. Monday. The SLA troopers withdrew after facing resistance from the Tigers, according to LTTE's Military Spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan. Meanwhile, medical sources in Kilinochchi said an ambulance with 7 patients needing advanced treatment at Vavuniya hospital could not proceed to Vavuniya as the Omanthai exit point remained closed following the clash. Artillery and mortar fire was also reported in Northern Front FDL in Muhamalai since Sunday evening.
