Claymore blast kills SLA soldier, injures 2

A Sri Lanka Army soldier was killed and two others were injured in a claymore mine blast on Kodikamam - Pt.Pedro road in the Jaffna peninsula, around 9.30 a.m., Tuesday. The mine was sett off about 500 metres from the Kodikamam junction, targetting the troops on a road clearing operation.

Court employees protest against SLA's attempted attack on Judge

0Employees of the Jaffna Magistrate Court picketed outside the court house Tuesday afternoon protesting against the attempted attack by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers on Additional Magistrate Srinithi Nandasegaran's official car on Sunday and threats to her life, sources in Jaffna said. Meanwhile, the three SLA soldiers who were detained for threatening the judge were released on Rs. 50,000 surety bail Tuesday, legal sources in Jaffna said.

SLA commanders directed to use air-transport in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) high command in Palaly military base, Jaffna district, has issued a directive to all SLA camps in Jaffna peninsula advising high level military officers to use Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) helicopters for internal travel within the Peninsula, informed sources in Jaffna said. The directive comes in the wake of increased claymore attacks targeted on SLA vehicles, and on soldiers deployed on sentry duty and street patrols.

Two Tamil youths shot dead in Mannar

Two youths were shot dead by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers Monday morning in Mannar district in two separate incidents during a cordon and search operation. One body was found in a paddy field opposite the Nanattan Pradesiya Sabha (PS) office building and the other body at Rasool Puthuveli area, located one and half km off Nanattan, police sources said.

Two Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops were injured when unknown gunmen attacked soldiers on street patrol near Methaikadai Junction 400 meters south of Point Pedro town along Jaffna-Point Pedro road at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, sources from Vadamaradchy said. Another SLA soldier was injured in a firefight lasting five minutes between unknown gunmen and SLA troops in Kachchai in Thenmaradchy Saturday afternoon, sources said.

Vankalaipadu SLN commander gives evidence in Pesalai killings

Mannar Additional Magistrate Mr.T.J.Pirapaharan Friday ordered the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Talaimannar Police to record the statement of the Commanding Officer of the Sunny Village Naval Detachment and to produce Lieutenant Commander Rohana Dissanayake of Sunny Village SLN camp on the next date of inquiry. The Additional Magistrate made the above directive at the conclusion of the evidence of Lieutenant Dissanayake Santhana Lakshman Dissanayake, commanding officer of Vankalaipadu Navy camp, legal sources said.

SLN Petty officer killed, bodyguard wounded in Jaffna islet attack

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed in a claymore explosion in Pirappamadu area in Vavuniya at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, Vavuniya Police said. SLA soldiers were engaged in street patrol near Mahakatukodiya Road in Pirappamadu when the explosion occurred. The seriously injured soldier died on his way to the Vavuniya General Hospital, police said.

Uduvil woman raped, murdered

0Ambalavanar Punithavathy, 43, from Uduvil in Manipay area has been shot dead after being raped by unknown assailants at 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, sources in Jaffna said. Assailants who forced entry into the unmarried woman's home, told the occupants that they have come to search the house, attacked the elderly mother before raping the woman, local residents said. The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp that houses the Intelligence Wing is located close to the house where the crime took place.

Independent report verifies SLN complicity in Pesalai violence

None of the many we met had the slightest doubt on this issue." The report also details the background to the prevailing ground situation in Mannar, urgent efforts required to prevent escalation of tensions, and provide security to the poor fisher families in Mannar.

Soldiers checked the Identity cards of residents and took away photographs which were shown to a masked paramilitary spotter waiting inside an SLA temporary sentry, local residents said.

The two women were arrested when they were returning from Chettikulam after attending to registration issues regarding their housing in Maharambaikulam, the parliamentarian said.

Two Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier were seriously injured in a claymore explosion on Jaffna-Palaly road near Urelu junction at 6:00 p.m. Monday, security sources said. The injured soldiers have been taken to Palaly Military Hospital. The claymore mine was targeted on a SLA truck, but hit the SLA troopers following behind the truck on bicycle patrol in the area, sources said.

Man shot dead by SLA inside Thandikulam HSZ

An unidentified man was killed by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers inside Thandikulam High Security Zone (HSZ) near Vavuniya Sunday night, security sources said. The SLA said the dead man is a member of Liberation Tigers and that they had recovered a AK-47 rifle and a new brand of bullet magazine near the dead body. Civil society sources in Vavuniya, however, said that suspicious circumstances surround the killing, and that the dead body may belong to a civilian arrested by the SLA.

SLA attack on bus driver triggers Jaffna transport workers strike

Members of Jaffna district transport workers union held a peninsula-wide work boycott Monday protesting against the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) attack on a bus driver, conductor and passengers Sunday along the KKS-Jaffna road, transport union officials said. The assaults took place following the grenade attack on SLA soldiers by unknown gunmen at Kokuvil junction on Sunday. The passenger bus from Tellipalai was detained for more than four hours near the Kokuvil junction, affected passengers said.

Seven killed, 13 injured in Trinco claymore explosion

One soldier of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), one woman home guard, two police constables, a police seargeant and a civilian were killed when a claymore mine exploded at Anuradhapura junction, about three km off the east port city Monday around 11.55 a.m. At least fourteen others were injured, Trincomalee police sources said. Another woman police constable, seriously injured in the explosion, died on her way to the hospital. Conditions of two others are serious, medical sources said.
