Fishing societies federation in Jaffna insists on NPC participation in New Delhi talks

[TamilNet, Sunday, 06 November 2016, 17:46 GMT]
“We have serious questions on why Northern Provincial Council was excluded in the talks held in New Delhi to resolve the conflict on Indian fishing trawlers entering the territorial waters in the North. At the same time, we are also highly critical to SL Navy taking part in these meetings,” V. Thavachelvan, the chairman of the Federation of Fishing Societies in Jaffna told TamilNet on Sunday. “Further, our federation was not properly constructed on the formation of the delegation to take part in the talks at New Delhi,” he further said. “While a delegation representing Tamil Nadu government was at the talks, the representation of the government of Northern Provincial Council was excluded,” he said accusing Colombo government for trying to form the delegation to fit its designs.

New Delhi, Colombo neglect NPC participation in resolving fisheries dispute in Historical Waters

[TamilNet, Saturday, 05 November 2016, 22:53 GMT]
The Fisheries Ministry of occupying Sri Lanka was exerting pressure on representatives of fisheries societies in North, when they were taken to New Delhi for a ‘high level’ meeting on 02 November. The fishermen representatives from North were told to cooperate with the suggestion from New Delhi of allowing Indian fishermen entry to the seas off Northern province for three consecutive years. The fishing society members were also asked to sign on a document, which they have declined. In the meantime, Colombo's ministers were discussing the issue with their counterparts at a ‘ministerial-level’ meeting in New Delhi on Saturday. In both the meetings, the Northern Provincial Council, which has a specific ministry for Fisheries, has been completely sidelined, according to the fishermen’s representatives who took part in the meeting at New Delhi on 02 November.

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 18 October 2016, 18:46 GMT]
0A Sinhala military intelligence operative attached to the occupying Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) in Arippu, a coastal village in the Musali division of Mannaar district was caught red-handed by Tamil fishermen Tuesday around 10:00 p.m. when he was harassing a family in the village. The military intelligence operative was beaten up by the angry villagers. The SL Navy sailors stationed at the naval detachment in Arippu tried to rescue the culprit by sending an SLN sailor. When the attempt failed, the navy sailor escaped from the villagers, who chased him to the naval detachment. The navy personnel threatened the villagers by firing gunshots. Making Eezham Tamil ‘Shiv Sena’ meaningful

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 12 October 2016, 23:39 GMT]
The chief coordinator of ‘Siva Cheanai’ in Jaffna, Ma'ravan-pulavu K. Sachithananthan has come out with a statement on Wednesday that on the Vijayadasami day (Tuesday), the Buddhists, Christians and Muslims disturbed Saiva Tamil religious rituals of Muththumari Amman temple in Anuradhapura Old Town. They chased away the devotees and one devotee who escaped into the sanctum of the temple was fatally stabbed by a Buddhist and a Muslim. Both of them also smashed the image at the sanctum. Condemning the act on behalf of ‘World Hindus’, Mr Sachithananthan urged for the supply of a replacement statue. The Eezham Tamil Siva Cheanai would be more meaningful if it could focus on countering the paradigm of Indian Shiv Sena that mischievously patronizes both genocidal Buddha and monkey god statues for geopolitical purposes in the island.

Criticism emerges in Jaffna over USA training SL military, IC soft-pedalling Tamil genocide

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 28 September 2016, 23:18 GMT]
In spite of all the accusations against the Sri Lankan government of war-crimes and other atrocities committed during the war, USA and other governments continue to have naval and military exercises with the Sri Lankan forces, as they also had these trainings with the SL military during the regime of the Mahinda Rajapaksa, said Rev Fr S.V.B. Mangalarajah, the chairman of the Commission for Justice & Peace of the Catholic Diocese in Jaffna in a follow-up video interview to TamilNet after the Ezhuka Thamizh uprising held in Jaffna. The implied message coming from the veteran human rights activist based in Jaffna was that the international community and its approach towards the national question of Tamils in the island was lopsided and unless that problem is seriously addressed by Tamils, the SL Government and the South would not deliver anything substantial for Tamils.

Ezhuka Thamizh has sent sharp message to all corners: Fr Ravichandran

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 27 September 2016, 18:36 GMT]
The main message coming from the ‘Ezhuka Thamizh’ uprising, especially from the people, who participated in their thousands, was that Tamils on the ground were not prepared to compromise their collective demand for self-rule in a merged North-East, said Jaffna-based human rights and civil activist Rev. Fr. M.V.E. Ravichandran in a video interview to TamilNet on Monday. Tamils reject the unitary system and the message has now been conveyed clearly to all the corners, he said. “Tamils want to live as a People and they don't want their cultural and national identity erased in any way. They are opposed to structural genocide,” the director of Jaffna Diocesan Catholic Youth Federation further said. Tamils should be given the right to appoint international judges to ensure the credibility of any model of investigations with international participation, he said.

[TamilNet, Friday, 09 September 2016, 18:36 GMT]
Uprooted Tamil fisher families from Pa'l'li-munai in Mannaar city said they were encouraged by Mannaar District Judge Aseervatham Gracian Alex Raja, who categorically stated on Monday that the SL Survey Department should not be engaging in surveying the lands of the families while their cases were being heard by the courts. A special motion was moved on Monday at Mannaar District Court as Divisional Secretary Subramaniyam Vasanthakumar told the families last month that he would be forced to take police action if they continued to protest against the Survey Department officials. Two surveying attempts were thwarted by the protesters last month.

Uprooted Tamils reject Colombo's crores of bribes for naval seizure of Pa'l'li-munai in Mannaar

[TamilNet, Thursday, 11 August 2016, 23:50 GMT]
0The Tamil fishermen belonging to Pa'l'li-munai in Mannaar city, whose houses, lands and the fishing market, have been occupied by the SL military since November 1990 moved 19 cases against the SL Navy and the SL State in February 2013 after they were thoroughly disappointed by the political inaction inside the island and after seeing the Geneva discourse not bringing any solutions home. The case has been scheduled for hearings 21 times and postponed each time citing requests or absence from the respondents. Despite the pending case against the SL Navy, Colombo's Survey Department officials were attempting to survey the lands for permanent seizure on 02 July. The poverty-stricken fishermen told TamilNet on Thursday that they have not yielded to the pressure from Colombo, including the offer of crores of rupees to abandon their case and settle for alternative arrangements.

University engineers not learning lessons

[TamilNet, Thursday, 21 July 2016, 01:26 GMT]
The origins of Eezham Tamil militant struggle are often attributed to the university admissions policy of Srimao Bandaranayake regime in the early 1970s. The attribution actually belittles the magnitude of the age-old genocidal tendency of the agent-State in the island. But, even this underrated lesson has not been learnt by current university engineers in genocidal Colombo and their masters outside, commented Tamil activists for alternative politics in the island, citing the post-2009 manoeuvrings carried out in the universities and campuses in Jaffna, Batticaloa and Trincomalee in the country of Eezham Tamils.
