SL Police in Champoor blocks remembrance of Tamils massacred by SL military

[TamilNet, Saturday, 07 July 2018, 19:56 GMT]
The occupying Sinhala Army of genocidal Sri Lanka indiscriminately massacred more than 130 Eezham Tamils in Moothoor East in Trincomalee district on 07th and 08th of July in 1990, launching a so-called cordon and search operation. The people of Champoor and other villages commemorate the massacre victims every year. Last year, they marked the event on 07 July at the presence of TNA Parliamentarian K Thurairatnesingham putting up a basic structure in remembrance of those who perished. This year, the SL Police informed the people on Friday that it has prohibited the memorial event, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday. The United States Indo-Pacific Command is grooming the marine force of genocidal Sri Lanka at Champoor.

Sinhalas have come in big way, as opening of Kandyan Kingdom: Rt Rev Jebanesan

[TamilNet, Thursday, 28 June 2018, 23:38 GMT]
Tamils had been the first inhabitants and an original people of this island. Although some historians accept that fact, the present Sinhala historians do not take it. Back in the old days, when H.C. Ray was the professor of history at the University of Ceylon, he used to refute the claim that Tamils were interlopers. The interlopers were the Sinhalas and not the Tamils, he used to say. However, one is unable to resonate that fact anymore, says Rt Rev Dr S Jebanesan, the former Bishop of the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India, in an exclusive interview to TamilNet. The tyranny of the ‘majority’ is dominating the post-colonial political discourses and the case of ‘Sri Lanka’ is a classic example of this trend, the scholar of philosophy, theology as well as the Tamil and English languages, said.

[TamilNet, Monday, 28 May 2018, 21:04 GMT]

Jeyakumar from Ki'linochchi, who is a close confidante of Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Sivagnanam Sritharan. He has been instructed to present himself at the TID office in Colombo on Monday, sources close to the TNA parliamentarian said.

Ploy of ‘development’ by powers abetting Colombo aggravates ethnic discrimination

[TamilNet, Saturday, 05 May 2018, 22:28 GMT]
SL Minister for Housing and Construction Sajith Premadasa has allocated new housing schemes with modern infrastructure facilities for two ‘model villages’ for Sinhala settlers in Trincomalee while ignoring the housing needs of the war-affected and resettled Tamils in Moothoor East division of the same district, Rural Development Society activists in Champoor complain. The mainstream political parties from South are competing in winning the hearts and minds of Sinhala settlers and the foreign powers locked in a ‘development’ race in their greed for geopolitical space in the strategically located island in the Indian Ocean. As a result, all the SL ministries, departments of the SL State and the occupying SL military are deployed in a coordinated and accelerated demographic genocide in the East.

Don't deviate from agreed venue for memorial statue, JUSU warns VC of Jaffna University

[TamilNet, Saturday, 28 April 2018, 23:16 GMT]
The Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) has conveyed an ultimatum to Prof Ratnam Vignswaran, the vice chancellor of Jaffna University and the administration under him, to respect what they had previously agreed with the student leaders on launching a statue in remembrance of those who sacrificed themselves confronting the genocidal onslaught on Vanni in 2009. The University administration and the JUSU came to an understanding in a meeting on 19 April that the students could proceed with their plan of launching Mu'l'livaaykkaal memorial monument. The only dispute they had was on the venue, and it was the university administration that proposed the site to be alongside the Maaveerar memorial statue. But, now the University administration has come under pressure from the University Grant Commission and the SL Ministry of Higher Education, the student leaders said.

Militarisation of housing contract frustrates storm affected Tamils in Ampaa'rai North

[TamilNet, Monday, 23 April 2018, 18:49 GMT]
Tamil residents have expressed serious concerns over the occupying Sinhala military of genocidal Sri Lanka emerging as the contractor of reconstructing the roofs of a housing scheme with 684 apartments, which come under two village (GS) divisions in Periya-neelaava'nai of Kalmunai administrative division in the Ampaa'rai district, along the border of the Batticaloa district. The residents are in shock after learning that the apartments, initially constructed by the SL Foreign Ministry exploiting international funds in the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami catastrophe, are not strong enough to bear roofs of traditional tiles. The SL military contractors are now going to put up lighter roofing sheets, which are prone to wind suction during extreme weather, informed civil sources in the division told TamilNet.

[TamilNet, Sunday, 22 April 2018, 16:52 GMT]
Colombo's military and police are functioning as brokers for intruding woodcutters coming from other areas to collect timber by logging the trees in SL military occupied Tamil villages in Moothoor East of Trincomalee. The farmer's associations representing the resettling uprooted Eezham Tamils in Champoor, who are struggling to resume their lost agricultural livelihood, complain that recent deforestation has become one of the most severe problems on par with the militarisation of Moothoor East.

The move comes after hundreds of Sinhala soldiers were engaged on Dengue prevention programme under the so-called National Dengue Prevention Campaign along with medical officers and Public Health Inspectors. Mr Cooray has also influenced the Catholic Establishment in Jaffna to hire SL military for construction work, Tamil officials at the District Secretariat in Jaffna told TamilNet this week.

Making decisions rooted in native political space

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 03 April 2018, 23:25 GMT]
The binary choice in Colombo-centric politics will always be between the devil and the deep blue sea as far as Eezham Tamils are concerned, commented Tamil political activists in Jaffna observing the latest happenings in the North as well as in the South. Eezham Tamils should not conceive their central political space succumbing to the electoral politics of the genocidal unitary system, which is promulgated by the Mahawansa-mindset and the international injustice sustained by geopolitical manoeuvrings. The Tamil-speaking people should instead invest their efforts on evolving a native and unified political space centred in the North-East with the diaspora, Tamil Nadu and global solidarity dimensions which extend beyond their territorial boundary, they said.

[TamilNet, Sunday, 01 April 2018, 23:20 GMT]

Monks object alienation of public lands to Tamils in border village of Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Sunday, 25 March 2018, 21:11 GMT]
A Sinhala Buddhist extremist monk has been threatening the civil officials in Poaaratheevup-pattu (Vellaa-ve'li) division of Batticaloa district against alienation of public lands to 15 poverty-stricken and war-affected Tamil families at Maalaiyar-kaddu village, located close to the border with the Uhana division of Ampaa'rai district. The threat initiated by the monk has been escalating into pressure from the authorities of the occupying Colombo, informed sources at the District Secretariat told TamilNet. Maalaiyar-kaddu is a remote Tamil village located 55 km southwest of Batticaloa city. The intruding monk and Sinhala colonists have built a Buddhist temple at Chinna-vaththai, a GS division to the north of Malaiyar-kaddu, at the lands that belonged to Irrigation Department.

SL Departments worse than ever in seizing Tamil lands: TNA MP

[TamilNet, Friday, 23 March 2018, 21:24 GMT]
K. Thurairetnasingam, a veteran ITAK politician from Trincomalee and a national list parliamentarian of the TNA, says Colombo government's Forest Department, Department of Archaeology, Department of Wildlife Conservation, Department of Coastal Conservation and Mahaweli Authority behave in a manner worse than ever before when it comes to seizing the lands of Tamils. The close associate of Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan was making a particular reference to the latest move by the Mahaweli Authority planning to grab 7,000 acres of lands in Mullaiththeevu and said a strong message has already been conveyed through Mr Sampanthan to the concerned Establishment in Colombo. The matter would also be taken up with SL President Maithiripala Sirisena on his return from foreign vist, he further said when contacted by TamilNet on Friday.

TNA Parliamentarian calls for UN plebiscite on independent Tamil State

[TamilNet, Monday, 19 March 2018, 22:25 GMT]
Taking part in a side-event on Tamils Right to Self-Determination, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian Sivagnanam Shritharan on Monday called for a UN referendum among Eezham Tamils to exercise their external Self-Determination. The TNA MP was referring to 1977 democratic mandate for Tamil Eelam and the 2009-2010 referenda held in the Tamil diaspora. Mr Sritharan was braving the prohibition imposed upon him to articulate the aspiration by the 6th Amendment of genocidal Sri Lanka as he was explicitly calling for the exercise of the right to external self-determination. Mr Sritharan has smashed the taboo placed upon him by the TNA hierarchy controlled by R. Sampanthan and M.A. Sumanthiran through his explicit call for external right to self-determination at Geneva, Tamil political activists in Jaffna said welcoming the courageous move.

Muslim grassroots activists from East call for unity with Eezham Tamils

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 14 March 2018, 17:20 GMT]
Batticaloa-based veteran writer and journalist HLM Hanifa and Ampaa'rai-based national organiser of the All Ceylon Government General Employees Union (ACGGEU) Ismail Mohamed Lebbe, interviewed separately by TamilNet this week, came with the same analysis of the causes, effects and the aftermaths of the recent anti-Muslim pogroms in the island. HLM Hanifa warned that the next wave of the pogrom, which he predicted after a future island-wide elections, would be more intense and destructive than what shocked the Central Province and Ampaa'rai in the Eastern Province this time. Both of the veteran grassroots activists underlined the urgent need for unity among Eezham Tamils and Tamil-speaking Muslims in the North-East, and they were highly sceptical to the exploitative attitudes prevailing among the political elites among the Tamil-speaking Muslims.

Intense protest in Mullaiththeevu against SL Navy base blocks surveying for 3rd time

[TamilNet, Thursday, 22 February 2018, 21:05 GMT]
0The people of Vadduvaakal staged an intensive protest for more than 6 hours in front of the so-called ‘SLNS Gotabhaya’ navy base in Mullaiththeevu on Thursday. The move came as the SL Survey Department officials were attempting to measure 671 acres of lands, which the SL Navy has seized from the public several years ago. The SL State was trying to legalise the illegal land grab through a Gazette notification in August 2017. The people accompanied by their politicians managed to stop the surveying for the 3rd time. They also burnt an effigy representing the so-called ‘good governance’ regime in Colombo in front of the SL navy base.

Sirisena's deceptive election promise exposed in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Thursday, 08 February 2018, 15:21 GMT]
SL President Maithiripala Sirisena, during his latest propaganda trip to Jaffna on Monday, promised to open the coastal road that links Point Pedro in Vadamaraadchi North with Punnaalai in Valikaamam West for public use. In the meantime, ITAK Leader Mavai Senathirajah, who has deployed his son in the civic election race for Valikaamam North, was claiming that ITAK's 'collaborative politics' with Colombo was yielding results. But, within 2 days, the eyewash opening of the road for 'public use' was exposed as a farce as the people were refused access to use the road. The occupying Sinhala military has restricted the 'public use' to only allow SL State-owned bus service with military escort through the road on Tuesday.

Sinhala Buddhicisation stepped up in Kumpu'rup-piddi of Trincomalee North

[TamilNet, Monday, 15 January 2018, 22:48 GMT]
The Divisional Secretary of Kuchcahve'li administrative division in the North of Trincomalee district has come under pressure—direct harassment as an informed civil source described it—from the SL Presidential Secretariat in Colombo this week. The harassment is meted out on Mr P Thaneswaran after he had questioned the legality of intruding Sinhala Buddhist monks, who fenced off a public bareland at Kumpu'rup-piddi East on 02 January. Kumpu'rup-piddi, a traditional coastal Tamil village with findings of pre-Christian pottery sites, probably from protohistoric period, has been subjected to systematic Sinhala Buddhicisation as well as corporate exploitation by the occupying Sinhala State, especially after the genocidal war on Vanni in 2009.
