SLA search of Girls' School condemned

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian S Jeyananthamoorthy condemned Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers' entering Batticaloa Cicilia Girls and searching the school premises at 3:20 p.m. Saturday. "This is an act of intimidation and harassment of school children and this has created a sense of fear among school children. Further, armed soldiers occupying the school premises while the GCE A/L examination was in progress is against all norms of civilized conduct," the parliamentarian said.

TNA local election candidate, relative shot and killed in Valaichenai

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers and paramilitary gunmen, who emerged from the grounds of Karuvakerni Vigneswara Vidyalayam school, opened fire and killed a local election candidate and his relative around 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Valaichenai residents said. The incident took place 500 meters from Valaichenai Police station.

SLA soldier killed in Eluthumadduval claymore attack

One Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed and two soldiers seriously injured in a claymore attack on their vehicle inside SLA controlled High Security Zone (HSZ) north of Muhamalai checkpoint at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, sources in Jaffna said. The injured soldiers have been taken to the Palaly Military Hospital, according to sources.

Muslim civilian killed in SLA retaliatory fire in Mannar

A Muslim civilian was killed when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers in Mannar town, opend fire after an SLA soldier and two policemen were wounded in a grenade attack in front of the SLA camp in Mannar Stadium. Shops were closed and civilians remained indoors following the incident at 7:00 p.m. Saturday.

SLA sentry in Kaakaithivu attacked, no one injured

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) sentry points located near Kaakai thivu junction in Aanaikottai area inside the Jaffna Municipal perimeter came under gunfire from the nearby housing development at 1:30 p.m. Saturday sources in Jaffna said. SLA soldiers returned fire but no one was injured in the firefight. The gunmen used a house vacated by a family who moved to Vanni to mount the attack and escaped, according to sources.

SLA assaults Hindu priest after grenade attack

Unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade on the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) unit patrolling along the Kaithady-Kopay road in Thenmaradchchy Jaffna, Friday morning around 10.30 a.m causing minor injuries to two SLA troopers, sources from Kaithady said. The SLA troopers arrested the Hindu priest at a nearby Hindu Temple during the cordon and search operation, and assaulted him severely before releasing him in the evening, sources added.

Manthuvil parents to file habeas corpus petition against Varani SLA

Lawyers representing the parents of the eight civilians who disappeared from the Manthuvil East Seerani Kelakkai temple on the night of May 6 will file habeas corpus petitions in Jaffna High Court against the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) commanding officers stationed in the 52-4 Brigade headquarters in Varany, legal sources in Jaffna said. The parents are accusing the SLA soldiers from the Varany camp, located 3 km from the Kelakkai temple, of complicity in the disappearance of their sons.

Unknown attackers who entered the Sinhala settlement village of Rantharathenna in Omadiyamadu, around 10 km north of Welikanda in Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa border Monday night shot and cut to death 13 Sinhala settlers. Welikanda Police said 2 persons were admitted to Polonnaruwa and Welikanda hospitals. The attack on the village took place around 8:30 p.m. Monday, the Police said. Additional Sri Lanka Army soldiers were rushed to the village Tuesday morning. Omadiyamdu village was once used as a base for paramilitary Karuna Group.

Two Araly fishermen found murdered, SLN complicity suspected
