Eastern volunteer teachers demand permanency

0The Eastern Province Volunteer Teachers' Union (EPVTU) Monday launched a protest fast on rotation basis in front of the Zonal Education Office in Kalmunai in the Amparai district demanding permanent appointment to all volunteer teachers who have been working for about ten years without payment or any allowances, union officials said.

Four Tamil youths arrested in Akkaraipattu

Special Task Force (STF), the elite counter-insurgency arm of the Sri Lankan forces, Monday morning arrested three Tamil youths in Akkaraipattu town in the Amparai district and handed them over to the SL Police in the town. The police said they apprehended another youth after interrogating the three youths. The youths were in posession of a T-56 automatic rifle, Akkaraipattu police claimed.

STF, paramilitary attack on LTTE office repulsed - LTTE

Special Task Force (STF), the elite counter insurgency arm of the Sri Lankan forces and paramilitary cadres launched an attack on the Political office of the Liberation Tigers, located in Pavatta, in the interior west of Thirukkovil in Amparai district, Sunday around 2:15 a.m. during the night. The Tigers repulsed the STF and paramilitary cadres, according to Amparai District LTTE Political Head, Jeya. Truce monitors are yet to visit the attack site. Paramilitary cadres brought in 2 lorries are still moving around in the STF controlled area, according to the residents.

Kalmunai Council ITAK members take oath

0All six councillors elected on Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchchi (ITAK) ticket for the newly created Kalmunai Municipal Council took oaths before Mr.Kanagasabai Pathmanathan, Amparai district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian at an event specially held at Brothers' House Hall in Paandiruppu, Tamil sources in Trincomalee said. Mr. Y.L.Saleem, Kalmunai MC Commissioner, Mr.P.S.Peermohamed Thamby, Assistant Commissioner of Local Government, and Rev Fr.Dr.S.A.Mathew, leading educationist also participated in the event. Mr.K.Ehambaram, central committee of the TNA presided.

Young Mayor assumes duties in Kalmunai

21 year-old youth Mr.Abdul Rahim Asmir of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Thursday assumed duties as the first Mayor of the Kalmunai Municipal Council, and 52 year old Mr. Ismalebbe Kamardeen of Maruthamunai as Deputy Mayor at an event held in the Municipal Council building Thursday. "I will discharge my duties as the first citizen of the Kalmunai promoting better understanding between Muslims and Tamils and also would be taking concrete steps to develop the town," said the new Mayor in his address.

Kalmunai Hospital to get new Psychiatry ward

A Psycho-Traumatic Counselling Ward is to be constructed at an estimated cost of two million rupees at the Kalmunai base hospital by EHED-Caritas, a non-governmental organization, administrative officials of the hospital said. Rev.Fr. Sylvester Sritharan, Director of EHED-Caritas, Batticaloa District and Dr.Muhunthan, acting Medical Superintendent of the Kalmunai hospital laid the foundation stone for this project at an event held Monday afternoon, sources said.

LTTE officials in Amparai meet SLMM, raise STF harassment issues

Amparai District Political Head of the Liberation Tigers, Jeya, in a meeting with the Head of the Amparai District Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), Butti Ercisson, on Friday, raised concern over the recent threats issued to civilian co-operative managements in Thanidiyadi, Thankavelauthapuram and Kanchikudichcharu. STF troopers allegedly thretened the co-operative managements to shut down their services in the villages. Around thousand families were benefiting of the services being offered by the co-operatives, according to a co-operative official in the district.

The complaint was made during a meeting with SLMM Amparai District representatives Tuesday 10.00 a.m at the LTTE political wing office at Pavatta in Amparai district, sources from Amparai said.

An aircraft was seen circling over Wednesday from 10 a.m to 12.00 p.m, said LTTE sources in Amparai.

Mini cyclone hits Amparai, Batticaloa

Claymore blast kills STF elite trooper in Thirukovil
