First LTTE medical service in SLA held area

0The medical services of the Liberation Tigers conducted free mobile clinics for civilians for the first time in areas controlled by the Sri Lanka military Friday. The program was inaugurated in Vavuniya by LTTE’s Thileepan medical services. Fifteen doctors led by Dr. Ezhumathi Karikalan provided medical services and advice to hundreds of people at the refugee camp in Poonthottam in the morning and later in Maharampaikulam in Vavuniya.

'Police acting partially'-Mannar MP

"The Police in Mannar are acting in a partial manner in bringing the situation under control", said Vanni Tamil National Alliance MP Mr. Vino Noharathalingam, Friday. "I brought the matter to the notice of the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Vanni when I met him in Mannar this morning", he said. An emergency meeting was convened Friday morning by at the truce monitoring mission office in Mannar to restore peace in the town.

Veteran Sinhala actor Gamini Fonseka dies

0Mr.Gamini Fonseka, the well known Sinhala cinema actor turned politician died Thursday. He was 68. Mr. Fonseka played the leading role Gamperaliya, the first Sinhala film to win an international award. His film on the 1958 anti Tamil pogrom, Sarungalay, was well acclaimed. Mr. Fonseka was elected as an MP of the United National Party and served as the Governor of the Northeastern Province (1995 - 1998). His stardom and his fame remain unmatched in Sinhala cinema.

Tension in Akkaraipattu after attack on shops

Tension prevailed in Akkaraipattu Thursday after several shops in the Tamil division of the southeastern town were smashed up in the early hours of Thursday morning. "Sri Lanka Police stood by doing nothing while some thugs attacked the shops. The attack is aimed at instigating a violence between Muslims and Tamils. We are determined to stop this by peaceful means. We appeal to Tamils and our Muslim brethren not to rise to the bait of those who want to fan communal violence and divide our people", said Mr. S. Kuyilinpan, head of the LTTE's political division for the Ampara District Thursday.

LTTE delegation to leave for Europe

A high level delegation of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) led by its political head S.P.Thamilchelvan is scheduled to leave on a three-week visit to European countries on Wednesday through Katunayake International Airport (KIA). The delegation is expected hold discussions with legal and constitutional expert who formulated the Interim Self Government Authority proposals (ISGA), sources said. The team will also meet Government officials of several European countries during the tour.

TRO to assist war affected families in Muttur east

UNP rejects council, urges talks on ISGA

Batticaloa to be declared backward district in education

Sri Lanka University Grants Commission (UGC) agreed to a request made by the Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians to declare the Batticaloa district as a backward area in education. Northern Muslims support talks based on ISGA

Addressing the Pongu Thamil gathering, Mr. Michael Prue, MPP for East York and Beaches said he has been a politician for 18 years, was born and raised in Toronto and that he has never seen a crowd like he saw today in the history of Queens Park lawn.
